Vincenzo Corrao, che pur è stato molto attivo sulla scena jazzistica bolognese a cavallo fra gli anni ’70 ed ’80, è un nome che suona oggi poco familiare agli appassionati italiani di jazz. L’augurio è che questo suo nuovo album da leader, che arriva ben sedici anni dopo «My Favourite Songs», registrato in trio con Riccardo Luppi ed Attilio Zanchi, riassegni al veterano pianista e compositore nato a Tunisi quell’attenzione che sicuramente merita. Seppur non molto prolifico discograficamente, Corrao, già docente al Conservatorio felsineo – dal 2001 nell’allora appena nato Dipartimento Jazz – ha composto fra il 2005 e 2007 due brani sacri. Non si è insomma occupato solo di jazz; ha diretto spesso larghi ensemble in cui la parte vocale ha sempre rivestito un ruolo molto importante, tentando di gettare un ponte fra musica classica e afroamericana. Non è però questo il caso di «Friends», che è invece espressione fedele e sincera del suo credo jazzistico, del suo forte legame con la tradizione post–boppistica, Thelonious Monk “in primis”. Lo confermano senza timor di smentita due delle sue tre composizioni presenti nel disco, più apertamente Ode to Thelo, in modo meno esplicito Fab’s Tune, entrambe arricchite dal sax tenore lirico e profondo di Fabio Petretti, particolarmente ispirato anche nell’altro brano di Corrao, Cristy, una delicata ballad in cui suona invece il soprano. Sia quando viene eseguita in trio che in quartetto la musica scorre via fluida, mai banale, grazie anche al prezioso sostegno dell’efficace coppia ritmica formata dal pulsante contrabbasso di Roberto Bartoli – sontuoso il suo solo in Everything Happens to Me – e dalla batteria solida ed allo stesso tempo inventiva di Massimo Manzi. Se si esclude il piano solo di Chelsea Bridge, piacevole quanto inaspettato, «Friends» colpisce per il grande interplay, il senso di coesione ed una gioiosa scorrevolezza che possono nascere, come ci ricorda il titolo, soltanto da un’amicizia profonda e sincera.

Despite being a constant presence in Bologna’s jazz scene between the 1970s and 1980s, Vincenzo Corrao is a name which doesn’t ring a bell with today’s Italian jazz fans. The wish is that his new album as leader, released sixteen years after «My Favourite Songs», recorded in trio with Riccardo Luppi and Attilio Zanchi, calls the overdue attention to the veteran pianist and composer born in Tunis. Even though he hasn’t made many records Corrao, who taught at the Bologna Conservatory of Music – starting in 2001 in the newly formed Jazz Department – composed two sacred songs between 2005 and 2007. In short, he didn’t deal just with jazz; he often conducted large ensembles where vocals have always played a key role in bridging the gap between classical and African American music.
That is not the case with «Friends», which is actually the faithful, honest expression of his love for jazz and strong bond with the post–bop tradition, Thelonious Monk above all. That is confirmed without fear of contradiction by two out of his three compositions in the album, pretty overtly Ode to Thelo and less so Fab’s Tune; both of them are enriched by the lyrical, deep tenor sax of Fabio Petretti who sounds particularly inspired even in the other composition by Corrao, Cristy, a tender ballad where he plays soprano sax. The music flows smoothly and is never banal when it is played both by a trio and a quartet; that result is attained thanks to the precious support of the efficient rhythmic structure made of Roberto Bartoli’s throbbing double bass – his solo in Everything Happens to Me is magnificent – and Massimo Manzi’s solid as well as inventive drums. If one doesn’t take into account the piano solo of Chelsea Bridge, which is as pleasant as it is unexpected, «Friends» impresses with its interplay, its cohesion and a joyful smoothness which can only originate in a deep, sincere friendship as reminded by the title.
