"Questo disco parla della vita, della mia vita, della mia famiglia. Parte dalla realtà di tutti i giorni, un viaggio alla ricerca dei miei sogni, dei nostri sogni". Sono le parole dello stesso Sergio, nome d’arte SirJoe, Polito a fotografare nel migliore di modi «Black & White», l'ultimo suo lavoro, che esce quattro anni dopo «My Friend Ry». Questo, rispetto al precedente, è un album più vero e personale, dove i testi sono molto importanti, anche se non sfugge l’ispirazione dei grandi maestri americani. Qui però le influenze vengono rielaborate da Polito in chiave originale, anche perché ben coadiuvato dagli esperti e fedeli Gianni Spezzamonte e Danilo Scaggiante – entrambi membri della sua prima band, i B–Wops – così come da Marco Campigotto e Alberto Boscolo Agostini, suoi più recenti compagni d’avventura. Un altro quotato chitarrista, Carlo De Bei, è ospite in due brani ed impreziosisce con i suoi assoli, intessendo un fitto e proficuo dialogo con le chitarre di Boscolo Agostini, sia Lay You Down che Run Against the Wind, canzone dal testo scarno ma profondo. Se appare lieve la swingante New Morning on the Back of a Horse, unico brano strumentale del disco, più impegnata e sentita è la canzone d’apertura, Happy New Year, che invita a reagire alle difficoltà della vita e ai mali del mondo, un vero e proprio inno alla “resistenza”.Deliziosa è la versione di 4+20, di Stephen Stills, ed ancor più intensa appare quella di Almost Cut My Hair, di David Crosby, sentito tributo al musicista da poco scomparso che ha molto ispirato Polito, così come Tom Waits, la cui notturna Bronx Lullaby/Smuggler’s Waltz è illuminata da un lucido assolo del sax di Scaggiante. Il pensiero del leader si manifesta ancor meglio nei due ultimi brani, Friends Come and Go – arricchita dalla potente voce di Veronica Sbergia e dall'elegante chitarra acustica di Max De Bernardi – e Life, che ci riporta, quasi chiudendo un cerchio, a «My Friend Ry». Rispetto a quel pur riuscito lavoro, «Black & White» ci dice però che SirJoe è un cantante ormai maturo e sicuro dei propri mezzi, oltre che un eccellente chitarrista (ma questo già lo sapevamo). Gli ospiti possono arricchire un progetto, ma non sono più indispensabili, sono la ciliegina su una torta già di per sé bella e gustosa.

“This record talks about life, about my life, about my family. It starts from everyday reality and is a trip looking for my
dreams, our dreams.” These are the words of SirJoe, stage name of Sergio Polito, and they describe in the best way possible «Black & White», his latest album that was released four years after «My Friend Ry». It’s a more personal record where lyrics are important, even though the inspiration drawn from the American masters never fades away. Such influences are elaborated creatively by the Venetian guitarist and singer, and he’s backed up by Gianni Spezzamonte and Danilo Scaggiante, two faithful members of his first band, B–Wops, and Marco Campigotto and Alberto Boscolo Agostini, both of whom joined him recently. Carlo De Bei, another esteemed guitarist who already played on «My Friend Ry», is featured on two tracks and his solos enhance Lay You Down and Run Against the Wind by interweaving a dense dialog with Boscolo Agostini’s guitars. The only instrumental tune on the album, the swinging New Morning on the Back of a Horse, might seem light, while the album opener Happy New Year is deeper and more meaningful and urges to respond to life’s challenges and the world’s ills: it’s a proper ode to endurance. The interpretation of Stephen Stills’ 4+20 is lovely and the one of David Crosby’s Almost Cut My Hair is even more intense and a fitting tribute to the musician who passed away in 2023 and strongly inspired Polito. Tom Waits, whose dark Bronx Lullaby/Smuggler’s Waltz is brightened by Scaggiante’s captivating sax solo, is an equally important influence. The leader’s thinking shows even more clearly in the last two songs Friends Come and Go, featuring the powerful voice of Veronica Sbergia and the elegant acoustic guitar of Max De Bernardi, and Life, which goes full circle to «My Friend Ry». Compared to that excellent album, «Black & White» tells us that SirJoe is now a mature, confident singer as well as an outstanding guitarist (even if that was already known). Guests can certainly enrich a project, but they are no longer indispensable as they are the cherry on a cake that’s already appetizing in itself.
