La contrabbassista livornese Silvia Bolognesi è da tempo fra i protagonisti della scena italiana del jazz. Attiva su più fronti, ha alle spalle prestigiose collaborazioni (Roscoe Mitchell e Butch Morris, ma anche Tiziano Tononi e Marco Colonna, sono i primi nomi che vengono in mente), guida propri gruppi, con una spiccata predilezione per quelli allargati (Open Combo, Fonterossa Open Orchestra), ed è anche una coraggiosa produttrice discografica. Ha consolidato la sua fama internazionale formando nel 2009 l’Hear In Now, trio di corde con Tomeka Reid, cello, e Mazz Swift, violino, ma soprattutto entrando a far parte nel 2017 dell’Art Ensemble of Chicago, con cui ha inciso due album. Non deve sorprendere che una musicista così curiosa, duttile ed aperta abbia sentito la necessità di omaggiare Ellington, ma non quello che ti aspetteresti, piuttosto il Duke meno frequentato delle origini, degli anni del Cotton Club per intenderci. Con delle eccezioni però: ovvero i due temi tratti dalla «Such Sweet Thunder», del 1957, e Ko–Ko del 1940. La contrabbassista ha affrontato questa non facile sfida alla testa di un sestetto di amici–musicisti calatisi perfettamente nel progetto, dai fidati Emanuele Parrini, Tony Cattano ed Emanuele Marsico – che qui si rivela anche gustoso vocalist – ai più giovani Guglielmo Santimone e Sergio Bolognesi, cui si aggiunge come ospite Nick Mazzarella al sax alto. Scrive nelle note di copertina Francesco Martinelli: “…Sulle orme di Lacy e Rudd, di Mengelberg e Mangelsdorff, Silvia e il suo gruppo rinnovano la meraviglia di questi pezzi riscattandone il senso grazie all’intreccio con improvvisazioni originali – in cui via via riaffiorano altri ricordi di brani ellingtoniani – e con frammenti audio di suoni e voci, compresa quella di Ellington stesso, carichi della loro aura mediatica, messi a contrasto con l’ariosa libertà improvvisativa della band.”

Silvia Bolognesi, double bassist from Livorno, has long been one of the leading personalities of Italian jazz. Active on many fronts, she has collaborated with eminent musicians (Roscoe Mitchell and Butch Morris, but also Tiziano Tononi and Marco Colonna are the first names that come to mind), leads her own groups and has a marked preference for the large ones (Open Combo, Fonterossa Open Orchestra), and is also a bold record producer. She strengthened her international renown in 2009 by putting together Hear In Now, a string trio with Tomeka Reid on cello and Mazz Swift on violin, and by joining the Art Ensemble of Chicago, with which she has recorded two albums, in 2017. It’s no wonder that such a curious, supple and open musician felt the need to pay a tribute to Ellington; it’s not the musician one would expect, though, but rather the lesser–known Ellington that played at the Cotton Club at the outset of his career. There are some exceptions: the two themes taken from «Such Sweet Thunder» (1957) and Ko-Ko (1940). The double bass player carried out such feat by leading a sextet of friends–musicians that were fully committed to the project – from the trusted Emanuele Parrini, Tony Cattano and Emanuele Marsico, the latter also a fine vocalist on this project, to the promising Guglielmo Santimone and Sergio Bolognesi, plus Nick Mazzarella on alto sax. Francesco Martinelli penned the following liner notes: ”… Following in the footsteps of Lacy, Rudd, Mengelberg and Mangelsdorff, Silvia and her group renew the beauty of these pieces through the combination of original improvisations – echoes of songs by Ellington can be heard – and audio portions of sounds and voices, including Ellington’s own voice, that are replete with their aura and contrast with the freedom and improvisation of the band.”
