«Despite It All» è l’album del debutto del ventitreenne trombettista vicentino Sean Lucariello,che nel mese di luglio 2022 ha completato il suo percorso di studi al DipartimentoJazz del Conservatorio di Vicenza, conseguendo la laurea magistrale con lode. Il quintetto èformato da musicisti italiani e spagnoli che Sean ha conosciuto e con cui ha suonato durantegli studi compiuti sia nel nostro paese che in Olanda. Con loro ha quindi stabilito unacollaborazione proficua e duratura, che si è poi concretizzata nella registrazione, in pienapandemia, di questo fresco e riuscito «Despite It All». Tutti hanno dato un contributoimportante alla realizzazione degli arrangiamenti. Oltre al contrabbassista Francesco Bordignon,anche lui giovanissimo e vicentino, che firma il suggestivo tema d’apertura, va evidenziatol’apporto compositivo del pianista Alessandro “Sasha” Lattuca, siciliano trasferitosi in Olanda,che oltre al terzo brano firma anche la variegata suite finale, divisa in tre parti, notturna quantobasta. È un bop moderno ed avanzato il loro, ma forte di una spiccata vena lirica, che mettein risalto il fraseggio allo stesso tempo agile e preciso, morbido e rotondo, sia al flicorno chealla tromba del leader, che in qualche momento ricorda quello del mai dimenticato MarcoTamburini. Bello soprattutto il passaggio da Il Maestro e Margherita, brano riflessivo presoa tempo medio, alla più lenta Song with No Title, raffinata ballad di Lattuca, e quindi al velocee serrato The Beauty of Boredom. Un ruolo altrettanto importante nell’equilibrio del quintettoviene giocato dal sassofonista Eduardo Doreste Velasquez e dal batterista Ignacio AmpurdanésRuz, due talentuosi amici spagnoli del leader. Il chitarrista Matteo Nicolin, un altro caroamico non presente nel disco, ha composto il bel tema di In Five, impreziosito dal FenderRhodes di Lattuca.

«Despite It All» is the debut album by twenty–three–year old trumpeter from Vicenza SeanLucariello, who earned his master’s degree with Honors at the Conservatory of Vicenza’sJazz Department in July 2022. The quintet includes Italian and Spanish musicians Seanmet and played with during his studies both in our country and in Holland. He’s establisheda long–lasting collaboration with them which has resulted in this fresh and excellent album«Despite It All», recorded during the pandemic. Everybody has hugely contributed to thearrangements. Besides double bassist Francesco Bordignon, who’s young, hails from Vicenzatoo, and composed the enchanting opening theme, we must highlight the compositional talentof pianist Alessandro “Sasha” Lattuca, a Sicilian now based in the Netherlands. He composedthe third track as well as the variegated, quite nocturnal final suite divided into three parts.Their bop is modern and innovative, but has also a strong lyricism which underlines thesmooth and precise phrasing of the leader on the flugelhorn and on the trumpet. His phrasingreminds the never forgotten Marco Tamburini’s at times. What’s particularly nice is thetransition from the pensive Il Maestro e Margherita, played in a medium tempo, first to theslower Song with No Title, a refined ballad by Lattuca, and then to the fast The Beauty ofBoredom, with a tight rhythm. An equally important role in the quintet’s balanceis played by saxophonist Eduardo Doreste Velasquez and drummer Ignacio AmpurdanésRuz, two talented Spanish friends of the leader. Guitarist Matteo Nicolin, another dear friendis not in the album, composed the nice theme of In Five, enhanced by Lattuca’s Fender Rhodes.
