Riccardo Zorzi, nato a Vittorio Veneto (Treviso) nel 1988, è un musicista versatile, capace di muoversi agevolmente in situazioni fra loro molto diverse. Ha studiato a Milano con Walter Calloni, che lo ha avvicinato al pop ed alla fusion, ed ha poi completato gli studi di percussioni classiche al Conservatorio di Vicenza sotto la guida di Saverio Tasca. Nello stesso periodo ha frequentato anche il dipartimento jazz vicentino, dove ha studiato batteria con Mauro Beggio, ma anche composizione e pianoforte jazz. Zorzi guida da qualche anno un trio completato dal pianista Paolo Corsini e dal contrabbassista Marco Vavassori, che ha raggiunto un affiatamento esemplare, come ben testimonia ogni traccia di «Songs for My Daughter», il suo album d’esordio da leader. Forse proprio perché guidato non da un pianista ma da un batterista, il gruppo si distingue dai molti piano trio oggi attivi in Italia. Ciò trova conferma nell’ampia gamma dinamica e nella forte carica espressiva presenti in ciascuno dei sei brani dell’album, tutti composti dal leader, capaci di unire mirabilmente l’energia e la libertà espressiva del free jazz, come nella spagnoleggiante Pablo & Morpheus,ad un lirismo pacato e riflessivo, quasi nostalgico (Lulù e Nostalgia). Il batterista veneto precisa nelle note di copertina che “l’album raccoglie sei brani scritti negli ultimi quattro anni, diventando, come il titolo lascia intuire, una sorta di diario musicale plasmato dall’emozione silenziosa ma travolgente della nascita di mia figlia. Ogni composizione racconta un po’ di quel momento speciale e trasforma istanti di tenerezza, stupore e riflessione in melodie ed atmosfere ispirate. Ho cercato di far emergere sia la fragilità che la forza silenziosa di quei giorni, lasciando molto spazio all’improvvisazione e permettendo così alla musica di dispiegarsi attraverso il dialogo fra gli strumenti”. Il lavoro svolto dai suoi due preziosi compagni di viaggio ha fornito un apporto indispensabile alla creazione ed allo sviluppo dei brani del disco. Il loro contributo va oltre la mera interpretazione, essendo parte di un atto creativo condiviso, dove le idee prendono vita e si concretizzano nell’istante stesso in cui vengono suonate. Grazie ai molti concerti effettuati il trio ha potuto raggiungere un eccellente livello di coesione e mettere a punto un invidiabile “interplay”, qualità rare di questi tempi, eu che emergono in ogni nota di «Songs for My Daughter».

Riccardo Zorzi, born in Vittorio Veneto (Treviso) in 1988, is a versatile musician who moves with ease between widely differing musical worlds. He studied in Milan with Walter Calloni, who introduced him to pop and fusion, and went on to complete his studies in classical percussion at the Vicenza Conservatoire under the guidance of Saverio Tasca.At the same time he also attended the jazz department in Vicenza, where he studied drums with Mauro Beggio, as well as composition and jazz piano. For some years now, Zorzi has led a trio featuring pianist Paolo Corsini and double bassist Marco Vavassori, a group that has developed remarkable chemistry, as is clearly evident in every track on «Songs for My Daughter», his debut album as bandleader. Perhaps because it is led by a drummer rather than a pianist, the group stands out from the many piano trios currently active in Italy. The album's six original compositions display a remarkable dynamic range and expressive power, which admirably combine the energy and expressive freedom of free jazz – as in the Spanish–flavoured Pablo & Morpheus – with a calm, reflective, almost nostalgic lyricism (Lulù and Nostalgia). The drummer from Veneto explains in the liner notes that “the album bringing together six tracks written over the last four years, becoming, as the title suggests, a sort of musical diary shaped by the quiet yet overwhelming emotion of my daughter’s birth. Each composition captures a little of that special moment and transforms moments of tenderness, wonder and reflection into inspired melodies and atmospheres. I have sought to bring out both the fragility and the quiet strength of those days, leaving plenty of room for improvisation, allowing the music to evolve naturally through the dialogue between the instruments”. The support of his two outstanding musical partners has been essential to the creation of this album. Their contribution extends far beyond performance, as they are fully involved in a shared creative process in which ideas take shape through the very act of playing. After many performances together, the trio has achieved an excellent cohesion and forged an enviable interplay, one of «Songs for My Daughter»’s defining qualities.
