Rachel Gould (Camden, NJ, 1953) è da almeno quarant’anni, oltre che una didatta molto stimata,
una delle più dotate, lucide e sensibili cantanti di jazz in circolazione, nota ai più per le collaborazioni con Chet Baker e Sal Nistico. Di formazione classica (a Boston ha studiato anche violoncello), iniziò
ad esibirsi nei club americani all’inizio degli anni ‘70, ma si è presto trasferita in Europa, dove ha rincontrato e quindi sposato il sassofonista Sal Nistico, solista di punta della big band di Woody
Herman dal 1962 al 1965. Dopo aver vissuto in Germania (qui è nata la loro figlia Miriam), nel 1987
la famiglia è andata a vivere in Svizzera e qui Rachel, che aveva già insegnato in alcuni conservatori tedeschi, ha subito ottenuto una cattedra alla Swiss Jazz School. Dopo la prematura scomparsa di Nistico (Berna, marzo 1991), la cantante ha deciso di trasferirsi in Olanda, dov’è stata docente al conservatorio dell’Aia sino a qualche anno fa. Oggi risiede in Gran Bretagna. Anche se il suo primo album da leader risale al 1982 («The Dancer»), non ha pubblicato molti dischi a suo nome. Due di questi, «Dancing on a Dime» (1999) e «No More Fire» (2005), appartengono al catalogo Caligola. Ancor più preziosa appare quindi la scoperta di questo nastro registrato nel 1984 negli studi della
radio Bayerischer Rundfunk di Norimberga, di eccellente qualità tecnica ed artistica, in cui Rachel
e Sal guidano un quintetto formato da jazzisti americani emigrati in Europa. Dei sette brani del disco
sei sono composizioni della Gould (ma la musica di Empty Room è di Nistico), mentre il finale Vain Regret è uno strumentale di Stagnitta eseguito in quartetto senza la voce. Tutte le tracce sono interpretate con grande trasporto e profonda sensibilità, e rendono giustizia sia alle preziose quanto sottovalutate doti vocali di Rachel Gould che all’immensa classe strumentale di Sal Nistico, qui
davvero in gran spolvero. È un jazz fresco ed avvincente il loro, musica senza età, che si fa
apprezzare anche dopo trentotto anni. In definitiva, una magnifica scoperta!

Rachel Gould (Camden, NJ, 1953) is one of the most gifted, brightest and sensitive jazz singers in activity for at least forty years, known to most for her collaborations with Chet Baker and Sal Nistico. She’s also a respected teacher. Classically trained (she studied cello as well in Boston), she started performing in American clubs in the early Seventies, even though she soon moved to Europe, where she met again and married tenor sax player Sal Nistico, Woody Herman Orchestra’s leading soloist from 1962 to 1965. After living in Germany, where their daughter Miriam was born, the family moved
to Switzerland in 1987 and Rachel immediately got a chair at the Swiss Jazz School. After Nistico’s premature death (Bern, March 1991) the singer decided to go and live in the Netherlands, teaching at The Royal Conservatoire of The Hague up to a few years ago. She now lives in the UK. Even though her first album as leader dates back to 1982 («The Dancer») the vocalist hasn’t released many albums under her name. Two of these belong to the Caligola catalogue, «Dancing on a Dime» (1999) and
«No More Fire» (2005). Therefore, the discovery of this 1984 tape, where Rachel and Sal led a quintet consisting of American jazz musicians living in Europe, is even more valuable. The recording, whose artistic and technical qualities are excellent, was made at Bayerischer Rundfunk radio’s Nuremberg studio and now it can finally be appreciated by all jazz fans. It consists of seven tracks, six original
ones by Gould – but Empty Room’s music is by Nistico – while the final tune Vain Regret is an instrumental composed by Stagnitta, played in a quartet with no vocals. All tracks are performed with much enthusiasm and sensitivity and do justice to the overlooked, yet precious vocals of Rachel Gould and to the classy musical qualities of Sal Nistico, who was in great shape on this album. Their jazz is fresh and engaging, ageless music which is much appreciated even thirty–eight years later. Ultimately, what a sensational discovery!
