Nato nel 1981 e cresciuto a Bilbao, Pedro Makay passa a 13 anni dal pianoforte alla chitarra. Durante un lungo viaggio in Giamaica, in visita ad un amico pittore, scopre i ritmi caraibici, che costituiscono tuttora un’ispirazione importante per la sua musica, oggi più che mai varia e coinvolgente. Si perfeziona quindi come chitarrista di flamenco sotto la guida di Luis Cortes ed a 27 anni è già pronto per il debutto discografico, che avviene con l’album «Pedro Makay», giovandosi della presenza del chitarrista Carlos Velasco. Durante un tour in Sudamerica decide di fermarsi a Buenos Aires, dove registra nel 2010 il suo secondo disco da leader, «Ojos Negros», che gli fa guadagnare la candidatura ai Latin Grammy Awards dell’anno successivo. Nel 2011 decide quindi di tornare in Spagna, trasferendo la sua base operativa a Madrid, dove intensifica la propria attività concertistica, compiendo diversi tour in Europa. Nel 2020 i tempi sembrano ormai maturi per fissare su disco otto nuove canzoni, sintesi felice di un decennio d’intensa attività musicale, di incontri stimolanti e fruttuose collaborazioni, anche nel campo del jazz, come testimoniano le presenze di tromba e trombone, che conferiscono un sapore decisamente afrocubano a «Colores», titolo scelto per questo suo nuovo lavoro. Segnaliamo fra i molti ospiti il trombonista americano Norman Hogue, che impreziosisce con la sua sonorità rotonda il tema dolce e melanconico di Vahine no te tiare, ma una menzione spetta anche alla tromba pirotecnica di Miron Rafajlovic, protagonista di Colores, brano che è sintesi felice di tutto l’album, cui ha anche dato il titolo. C’è molta Africa nella festosa melodia di Volveré contigo cuando me quieras, impreziosita dalle voci dei griot Abba Suso (Gambia) e Oumou Bah (Mali), così come nell’ipnotica cantilena di La mosca, che si avvale del contributo di Syla Aboubakar. In Caravana, che ricorda la Caravan ellingtoniana, si può ascoltare un altro importante ospite africano, Mohammed Elbouzidi, specialista del guembri. Difficile catalogare la musica del cantautore spagnolo, che sembrerebbe appartenere al vasto panorama della World Music, termine di cui si è spesso abusato, ma che per lui sembra quanto mai pertinente. È in ogni caso un’iniezione di solare allegria in tempi come questi, particolarmente tristi e grigi. Con il pensiero rivolto ai colori del Gauguin tahitiano, rinfranchiamoci intanto con i variopinti «Colores» musicali di Pedro Makay.

Born in 1981 and raised in Bilbao, Pedro Makay switched from piano to guitar at 13. During a long trip to Jamaica, where he visited a painter friend of his, he got acquainted with Caribbean rhythms which are still an important source of inspiration for his music, now more than ever varied and contagious. He honed his skills as flamenco guitarist under the guidance of Luis Cortés and at 27 he made his debut with the album «Pedro Makay», benefiting from guitarist Carlos Velasco’s presence. During a South American tour he decided to stop in Buenos Aires where he recorded his second album as leader, «Ojos Negros», in 2010; that project earned him a Latin Grammy Awards nomination the following year. In 2011 he made up his mind to move back to Spain, relocating his base to Madrid, where he intensified his concerts by embarking on several tours in Europe. In 2020 the time was ripe to record eight new compositions, the excellent result of a decade filled with music, exciting encounters and fruitful collaborations, even in the world of jazz, as proven by the trumpet and trombone giving an Afro–Cuban taste to «Colores», the title chosen for this record. American trombonist Norman Hogue, who enriched the sweet and melancholic theme of Vahine no te tiare with his round sound, stands out but Miron Rafajlovic’s explosive trumpet deserves special mention as well; he’s the protagonist of Colores, a song which represents the perfect recap of the album besides titling it. There’s much African sun in the joyful melody of Volveré contigo cuando me quieras, enriched by the voices of Gambian griot Abba Suso and Malian griot Oumou Bah, but also in the hypnotic sing–song of La mosca, featuring Syla Aboubakar. In Caravana, arranged in the style of Ellington, we can listen to another important African guest, Mohammed Elbouzidi, a master of guembri. It’s difficult to label the Spanish singer–songwriter’s music, which seems to belong to the wide category of World Music, a term often misused which actually sounds more than appropriate in his case. It’s a shot of radiant happiness in these particularly dark times anyway. As we think about the colors of Tahitian Gauguin, let’s enjoy the multicolored musical «Colores» of Pedro Makay.
