A differenza di molti giovani jazzisti, Pasquale Paterra, pur avendo alle spalle un’intensa attività professionale sia nel campo del jazz che in quello della classica, ha aspettato la soglia dei quarant’anni per fare il suo debutto discografico da leader. «Images» è il frutto di molti anni di lavoro, iniziato in sestetto e proseguito quindi in trio, la cui particolare composizione strumentale non può non richiamare le analoghe formazioni senza basso guidate da Paul Motian e Ron Miles, entrambe con Bill Frisell. L’album presenta undici brani composti dal leader nell’arco di una decina d’anni, da quello lirico e sognante che gli dà il titolo, o dal dolcemente nostalgico Walking with My Father, al più complesso blues di Contrasti, incontro–scontro fra le dialoganti linee melodiche disegnate da tromba e chitarra. Paterra, che ha un suono pieno e rotondo, un fraseggio agile e controllato, dimostra grande sensibilità nell’affrontare sia l’intricato tema di Something About You, ballad molto delicata, che l’ipnotico, a tratti asimmetrico incedere di Sloping Houses, titolo che richiama le “case in pendenza” di via Casepente a Palena, nell’Appennino chietino, dov’è nato. Il trombettista abruzzese è qui affiancato dal chitarrista Giovanni Bertelli e dal batterista Fausto Negrelli, amici oltre che compagni di avventure musicali da almeno un decennio, ma risulta particolarmente prezioso l’inserimento in quattro brani di Federico Pierantoni, trombonista che è ormai una consolidata realtà del jazz italiano. L’interplay tra i due ottoni è serrato e molto efficace sia in A Big Family che in Stars, quest’ultima dedicata a Marco Tamburini, che sono mascheramenti – fra l’altro gli unici dell’album – di, rispettivamente, I Love You e Stella by Starlight, ed in cui affiorano echi del celebre quartetto senza pianoforte di Mulligan e Baker. La semplicità, la ricerca di linee melodiche cantabili, senza per questo mai perdere il piacere di improvvisare, oltre che un’attenta cura del suono del gruppo, sembrano essere i tratti salienti di «Images», disco d’esordio sincero e decisamente riuscito.

Unlike many young jazz musicians, Pasquale Paterra, despite having a long career in both jazz and classical music, released his debut album as a leader in his early 40s. «Images» is the fruit of many years of hard work which begun in a sextet first and a trio after, whose peculiar structure can’t help but recall similar bassless lineups led by Paul Motian and Ron Miles, both of them including Bill Frisell. The album consists of eleven tracks composed by the leader over ten years and includes the lyrical, dreamy title–track, the gently nostalgic Walking with My Father, and the more complex blues Contrasti, a clash between melodies played by trumpet and guitar. Paterra, who possesses a round sound and a faultless phrasing, shows a great sensitivity when playing the complex theme of the tender ballad Something About You and the mesmerizing, at times asymmetrical tempo of Sloping Houses, a title that evokes the sloping houses on via Casepente in Palena, on the Chieti Apennines, where the musician was born. The trumpeter from Abruzzo plays alongside guitarist Giovanni Bertelli and drummer Fausto Negrelli, friends that have shared many musical adventures for a dozen years at least, but the role played by trombonist Federico Pierantoni, an established musician in the Italian jazz scene, is invaluable. The interplay between the two brass instruments is tight and powerful in A Big Family and Stars – the latter is dedicated to Marco Tamburini – which are disguises of I Love You and Stella by Starlight respectively and one can hear echoes of Baker and Mullingan’s renowned pianoless quartet. Simplicity, the search for singable melodies while keeping the love for improvisation, as well as the attention to sound are the main features of «Images», a frank and excellent debut album.
