Torna a pubblicare con Caligola il vicentino Michele Polga, uno dei più interessanti e originali tenorsassofonisti attivi oggi in Italia, dopo due dischi incisi per Abeat in quintetto con Fabrizio Bosso: «Live at Panic» (2011) e «Studio Session» (2013). Questo suo nuovo lavoro - ma non troppo, a leggere la data di registrazione - ci riporta invece al precedente Cd Caligola, «Clouds over me» , che vede all'opera lo stesso quartetto, completato da musicisti sensibili e virtuosi come Paolo Birro - più impegnato al Rhodes che al piano acustico - Stefano Senni e Walter Paoli. Chi ha ascoltato l'album del 2008, troverà qui molte affinità con quei climi sognanti, spesso rarefatti, ma sempre intrisi di pregnante musicalità . Ma scoprirà allo stesso tempo un musicista molto maturato, ormai pienamente consapevole dei propri mezzi espressivi, e quindi senza alcun timore reverenziale verso i grandi maestri, passati (Coltrane) e presenti (Shorter). I brani del disco portano tutti la firma dal leader ed evidenziano, pur con atmosfere diverse (dalla sognante Way of escape alla più aggressiva Day light , quasi "free"), una marcata continuità espressiva, facendo di «Little magic» un'opera estremamente coerente e lineare, da ascoltare tutta d'un fiato. Ci vengono in aiuto le belle parole spese nelle note di copertina da Luca Conti, direttore del mensile Musica Jazz: "non fatevi scappare quest'album, uno dei migliori dischi di sax tenore usciti in Italia nel 2015 e la prova inconfutabile del grande talento di Polga. Dopo quattro dischi da leader (uno dal vivo) e una notevole quantità di partecipazioni a lavori altrui, il sassofonista veneto ripesca oggi lo stesso quartetto che aveva inciso l'ottimo «Clouds Over Me» e ne perfeziona le già brillanti intuizioni". In circolazione - non solo in Italia - c'è ben poca gente che suona con questa forza, lasciando intuire di aver ascoltato e assimilato tutti i grandi dei tempi che furono ma mostrando di aver saputo trovare un'originalità creativa che sa mettere in fuga ogni sospetto d'imitazione." .

Michele Polga, one of the most interesting and original tenor saxophonists active today in Italy, from Vicenza, is back with Caligola Records after two albums recorded for Abeat label in quintet with Fabrizio Bosso: «Live at Panic» (2011) and «Studio Session» (2013). This new - but not too much, according to the recording date - work, brings us back to the previous Caligola album, «Clouds over me», recorded by the same quartet, with the addition of sensitive and virtuous musicians such as Paolo Birro - who is here more committed to the Rhodes than to the acoustic piano - Stefano Senni and Walter Paoli. Those who have listened to the album from 2008, will find here many similarities with those dreamy climates, often rarefied, but always soaked in poignant musicality. But at the same time they will discover a more mature musician, now fully aware of his means of expression, and therefore without any awe of the great masters, past (Coltrane) and present (Shorter). All the tracks of the album are composed by the leader and, although with different atmospheres (from the dreamy Way of escape to the more aggressive Day light, almost ""free"), they highlight a marked continuity of expression, transforming «Little magic» in an extremely consistent and coherent record, to listen to all at once.
