Dopo aver suonato (e cantato) Freedom, nel suo album in solo registrato durante la pandemia («Isolation», Caligola 2281), Matteo Mosolo ha sentito l’esigenza di rendere omaggio al “maestro” Charles Mingus, nel centenario della nascita, ed ha così scritto, dedicandogliela, una suite per contrabbasso e tromba in nove movimenti, che in modo umile e rispettoso cerca di raccontare la vita e le opere di un animo sì irrequieto, ma pieno d’amore. “Non c’è musicista di jazz” – ci ha confidato il contrabbassista friulano – “che sia riuscito ad emozionarmi in maniera così forte e definitiva come lui. Ancor oggi, ogni volta che mi approccio allo studio di un suo brano, sento come una sorta di timore reverenziale… Per questo motivo non avrei mai potuto omaggiare Mingus suonando e registrando solo sue composizioni.”. Nel 2005, proprio grazie alla scoperta della sua musica, Mosolo ha iniziato a muovere i primi passi nel mondo del jazz; al suo fianco c’era allora l’altrettanto giovane Flavio Zanuttini – entrambi udinesi, classe 1985 – che gli ha fatto scoprire ed ascoltare per la prima volta «Blues and Roots». È stato amore a prima vista. I due musicisti si conoscono da ormai quasi vent’anni – l’interplay che contraddistingue quest’incisione è lì a dimostrarcelo – ed è così sembrato naturale chiedere all’amico trombettista – che nel frattempo aveva sviluppato una tecnica ed una poetica molto versatile e personale – di accompagnarlo in questo suggestivo viaggio nel mondo mingusiano. È ancora il contrabbassista a rivelarci che “sono bastate poche battute per accorgerci che la musica che stavamo suonando andava nella giusta direzione.”. Questo è il quarto album registrato per la nostra etichetta da Matteo Mosolo. Sono dischi completamente diversi fra loro, ma «Half Black Half White Half Yellow» è probabilmente il lavoro sin qui più maturo, riuscito ed originale, un importante passo in avanti nella definizione della propria personalità musicale.

After playing (and singing) Freedom in his solo album recorded during the pandemic («Isolation», Caligola 2281), Matteo Mosolo decided to pay a tribute to a master like Charles Mingus on the centennial of his birth. He composed and dedicated to him a suite for double bass and trumpet in nine movements, with the aim of telling the life and music of a troubled, yet loving soul in a respectful and humble way. The double bass player from Friuli confided us: “There is no jazz musician that moves me as strongly and consistently as him. To this day, every time I tackle one of his songs I am in awe of him... that is the reason why I never could have paid him a tribute by playing and recording his compositions only.”. In 2005, after discovering his music, Mosolo took his first steps in jazz; Flavio Zanuttini – they were both born in 1985 in Udine – was by his side and introduced him to the album «Blues and Roots». It was love at first sight. The two musicians have known each other for almost twenty years – the interplay on the record is a clear proof of it – and therefore it seemed natural for Matteo to ask his friend trumpeter, who had developed a very personal, versatile technique and poetics, to accompany him on a fascinating journey through the world of Charles Mingus. The double bass player went on to tell us that “a few bars were enough to realize the music we were playing was going in the right direction...”. This is the fourth album that Matteo Mosolo has recorded for our label Caligola. Each body of work is different from the other, but «Half Black Half White Half Yellow» is probably the most mature and original album so far, a big stride forward in the shaping of his musical identity.
