Giovanni Maier è da oltre trent’anni uno dei contrabbassisti più apprezzati ed attivi della scena jazzistica italiana. Ha collaborato, fra gli altri, con Roberto Ottaviano e gli Electric Five di Enrico Rava, Roberto Cecchetto e l’Italian Instabile Orchestra, Giancarlo Schiaffini e gli Enter Eller, solo per fare qualche nome; nelle più di cento incisioni cui ha partecipato molte sono quelle che lo vedono nella veste di leader. Oltre che affermato musicista e stimato didatta, Maier è dal 2000 anche coraggioso e prolifico produttore discografico con l’etichetta Palomar, che conta oggi oltre settanta titoli in catalogo. In uno di questi, «Naked Songs» (2015), il contrabbassista goriziano aveva incontrato Matteo Alfonso, pianoforte, in un emozionante duo che utilizzava solo materiale originale. Altrettanto attivo, sia come didatta che come concertista, anche se meno prolifico discograficamente, il pianista veneziano ha ritrovato dopo un decennio in studio di registrazione il contrabbasso di Maier per rendere omaggio, ancora una volta in duo, ad un gigante del jazz come Charles Mingus. I due l’hanno fatto reinterpretando in modo sincero, originale e profondo nove brani del suo sterminato repertorio, ivi compresi Eclipse e Nouroog, fra i meno frequentati dai jazzisti. L’idea, nata nel 2019 in occasione del quarantennale della morte di Mingus, ha così prodotto una riuscita rivisitazione fatta, come i due musicisti tengono a precisare nelle note di copertina, a “bassa risoluzione”: il risultato è “ciò che rimane dei capolavori del grande compositore e contrabbassista afroamericano dopo la scrematura armonica a cui li abbiamo sottoposti. La strategia con la quale è stato deciso di personalizzare il suo repertorio è infatti la stessa che Mingus ha adottato nella versione originale del brano Pithecantropus Erectus: dopo un tema che si snoda attraverso diverse sezioni armonicamente difformi, l’improvvisazione viene sviluppata su una struttura armonica molto semplice e scarna, di poche battute. Questo approccio permette maggiore libertà d’azione e possibilità di “fuga” da un contesto musicale tradizionale…”. Un’essenzialità la loro, quasi minimalista, ma rispettosa della bellezza delle composizioni affrontate, che in questa rilettura dal sapore cameristico non perdono la loro originaria forza espressiva, né la capacità di emozionarci.

Giovanni Maier has been one of the most renowned and dynamic Italian jazz saxophonists for over thirty years. He collaborated with Roberto Ottaviano and Enrico Rava’s Electric Five, Roberto Cecchetto and the Italian Instabile Orchestra, Giancarlo Schiaffini and Enten Eller, to name just a few; he took part in over a hundred recordings and was the leader in plenty of them. Besides being an established musician and respected teacher, Maier has been a brave and prolific record producer at Palomar, a label which has released over 70 albums, since 2000. One of them, «Naked Songs» (2015), was recorded by the double bass player from Gorizia and Venetian pianist Matteo Alfonso as a touching duo that only played original material. Alfonso is as active as Maier, but more as a teacher and concert pianist than as a recording artist. Both musicians met a decade later in the studio and, once again as a duo, recorded a tribute to jazz legend Charles Mingus. They interpreted tunes from his immense repertoire truthfully and creatively, including Nouroog and Eclipse, among the compositions jazz musicians play less. The idea came about on the 40^th anniversary of the passing of Mingus in 2019 and produced an excellent “lo–res” album, as specified by the two musicians in the liner notes: the result is ”what is left of the masterpieces created by the great African American composer and double bass player after the harmonic selection they went through. The strategy we adopted to personalize the repertoire of Mingus is the same as the one he pursued in the original version of Pithecanthropus Erectus: the theme unfolds in sections that vary in harmony, and improvisation evolves on a simple, bare harmonic structure made of few bars. This approach allows more freedom and the chance to break free from a traditional music context”. Their simplicity is almost minimalist, but enhances the beauty of songs that lose neither their expressive force, nor their power to move when interpreted as chamber music.
