Rispetto al quartetto che aveva registrato tre anni prima «The mask» (Caligola 2143), cambiano il pianista (Andrea Calì prende infatti il posto di Mauro Gallo) e soprattutto il nome del leader: lì era Andrea Ferrario, qui Marcello Molinari. Ma unisce i due dischi un'analoga visione musicale, che innesca
all'interno di una solidità ritmico - armonica di gusto neo - bop, una vena melodica comune a gran parte della tradizione musicale italiana, riuscendo così a conferire scorrevolezza ed originalità ad una musica che appare nel suo complesso più intima e rilassata di quella del precedente lavoro. Fornisce nella fattispecie un importante apporto compositivo anche Molinari, quasi a giustificare il suo ruolo di leader, benchè sia ancora Ferrario a firmare il maggior numero dei brani (quattro su otto) di un repertorio che si chiude con l'inaspettata quanto riuscita versione di una delle più belle quanto sottovalutate gemme beatlesiane, la nostalgica Here, there and everywhere. I cinque anni di lavoro comune si fanno sentire, e la coppia ritmica - che vede il leader affiancato dal solido contrabbasso di Giannicola Spezzigu - sottolinea nel migliore dei modi il fluido incedere dei temi, da quello iniziale, incalzante ed aperto, di sapore modale, che dà il titolo all'album (il viaggio è quello di Neal Cassady, scrittore della Beat Generation e protagonista di «Sulla strada» di Keruac), a Small forest's soliloquy, ballad intensa cui dà un sostanzioso apporto il pianoforte di Stefano Onorati - entrambi sono firmati da Molinari - che sostituisce in questo brano così come in Gegè, di Ferrario, altro tema lento e riflessivo, il pianista stabile del quartetto. Il divertente riff boppistico di Joke, trampolino di lancio per il suo fluido sax tenore, precede l'unico brano in cui lo si puó ascoltare al soprano, Favola, brano dal respiro ampio e lirico, così come lo è quello della splendida melodia di McCartney, seconda forse alla sola Yesterday, che il quartetto riesce a trasformare in uno standard delizioso, meritevole di un posto nel «Real Book».

This quartet differs from the one who registered «The mask» three years before (Caligola 2143) because it has a new pianist, Andrea Calì in place of Mauro Gallo, but most importantly because of the leader's name: previously Andrea Ferrario, now Marcello Molinari. What links the two records is a similar musical vision, that triggers a melodic vein common to much of the Italian musical tradition within a neo - bop rhythmic and harmonic solidity, thereby conferring smoothness and originality to a music which appears as a whole more intimate and relaxed than in the previous work. In this case Molinari provides an important contribution as a composer as well, almost to justify his leading role, although Ferrario is still signing most of the tracks (four out of eight) of a repertoire that closes with the unexpected and well done version of one of the most beautiful and undervalued gems of the Beatles, the nostalgic Here, there and everywhere. The five years of working together are perceivable, and the rhythmic couple - the leader flanked by the solid double bass of Giannicola Spezzigu - emphasizes in the best way the fluid proceeding of musical themes, from the persistent and open start, of modal flavor, that gives the title track (the journey is the one of Neal Cassady, the Beat Generation writer and star of «On the Road» by Kerouac), up to the intense ballad Small forest's soliloquy - both themes are composed by Molinari - with a substantial contribution by Stefano Onorati at the piano, who substitutes the core pianist of the quartet in this piece as well as in Ferrario's Gegè, another slow and thoughtful theme. The entertaining bop riff of Joke, springboard for the fluid tenor sax, precedes the only song in which you can listen to him at soprano, Favola, a wide and lyrical - ranging piece, just as the beautiful melody of McCartney - surpassed perhaps only by Yesterday - , that the quartet is able to transform into a delicious standard, worthy of a place in the «Real Book».
