A quasi tre anni di distanza dall'album del debutto, il quartetto Shuffled - che prende il suo nome proprio da quel disco - diretto dal batterista Marcello Benetti, con molti più concerti alle spalle e tante nuove idee da sviluppare, è tornato in studio d'incisione per la seconda tappa di quello che puó ormai considerarsi un vero e proprio progetto musicale, felice e riuscita sintesi di quattro forti quanto distinte personalità . Se il valore di Jeff Albert è ben noto agli appassionati italiani, hanno fatto passi da gigante sia il leader, veneziano da qualche anno trasferitosi a New Orleans, sia la violoncellista Helen Gillet, davvero superlativa con l'archetto, la cui fama sta notevolmente crescendo negli States, che il giovane plurisassofonista - che qui aggiunge al clarinetto il flauto - Rex Gregory, forse il talento più multiforme ed esplosivo del quartetto. Quest'ultimo si è per di più preso la responsabilità , insieme al leader - che nel disco precedente aveva firmato invece tutti e otto i brani contenuti - del materiale compositivo, dimostrando una felice vena melodica, complessa e lineare allo stesso tempo, evidente sia nella soave, quasi eterea Sylvan song che nell'incalzante e ritmicamente sostenuta Circles - entrambe affrontate con il flauto - ma anche nella sinuosità contemporanea della finale Garden wall, che ce lo conferma sempre splendido clarinettista. Allo stesso modo le due composizioni offerte al quartetto da Marcello Benetti sembrano non meno interessanti: sia la movimentata breve suite Il Barone - eterogeneo e cangiante ritratto di un amico del cuore - che l'ipnotico e cangiante tema del brano che dà il titolo all'album, suggestivo incrocio fra cultura europea ed americana, come suggerisce lo stesso titolo. «From East to West» è insomma un disco spumeggiante, ricco di spunti stimolanti e di momenti riusciti, in cui i quattro musicisti, forti di un invidiabile "interplay", sembrano muoversi con estrema fluidità e naturalezza, come componenti di un unico strumento, compatto e multiforme al tempo stesso.

Almost three years after the debut record, the Shuffled Quartet - which takes its name just from that album - directed by drummer Marcello Benetti, now with many more concerts behind and new ideas to develop, is back in the recording studio for the second round of what can now be considered a real music project, an inspired and successful synthesis of four strong and different personalities. While the value of Jeff Albert is well known to the Italian jazz fans, others have been making great strides as well: from the leader, a Venetian who has moved to New Orleans a few years ago, to the cellist Helen Gillet, really superb with the bow and whose fame is growing significantly in the States, and the young multi - instrumentalist Rex Gregory, perhaps the most talented and multifaceted in the explosive quartet, that here adds the flute to clarinet. The latter is the one who has taken the responsibility of the composition along with the leader - who had signed all eight songs in the previous album - showing a cheerful melodic vein, complex and linear at the same time, evident in both the sweet and almost ethereal Sylvan song and in the pressing and rhythmically sustained Circles - both dealt with the flute - but also in the contemporary sinuosity of the final track Garden wall, which confirms him as a wonderful clarinetist. Similarly, the two compositions offered by Marcello Benetti to the quartet seem no less interesting: both the lively short suite Il Barone - heterogeneous and shimmering portrait of a best friend - and the hypnotic and changing theme of the title track, evocative crossing between European and American culture, as the name suggests. In conclusion, «From East to West» is a sparkling record, full of stimulating ideas and successful moments, in which the four musicians, armed with an enviable interplay, seem to move with great fluidity and naturalness, as components of a single instrument, compact and multiform at the same time.
