Qualche mese dopo la pubblicazione dell’album «Live in Mestre Venezia 1984» – che documenta gli standard eseguiti dal duo formato da Mal Waldron e Sam Rivers nel concerto tenuto il 15 febbraio 1984 al Teatro Toniolo di Mestre – ed a seguito dell’entusiastico riscontro ricevuto dagli appassionati di ogni parte del mondo, abbiamo deciso di rendere pubblico anche il momento finale di quella magica serata, ovvero il lungo bis che l’ha conclusa. Venne eseguita in quell’occasione Breeze, una delle composizioni più rappresentative di Rivers, ed unico brano originale dell’intero concerto. Se durante il lungo set dedicato agli standard aveva suonato esclusivamente il sax tenore, qui Rivers mette in mostra tutto il suo talento di polistrumentista, passando con disinvoltura dal sax soprano al flauto, strumenti che erano parte integrante del suo linguaggio musicale, soprattutto nelle esibizioni dal vivo. La musica sembra aprirsi a soluzioni molto più libere ed aperte, riportando in luce quello spirito esplorativo che lo aveva consacrato come una delle voci più significative dell’avanguardia jazzistica del decennio precedente. A sostenerlo nei suoi lunghi ed ispirati voli solistici c’è sempre il solido ed ipnotico pianoforte di Mal Waldron. La pubblicazione di Breeze completa quindi la documentazione di quell’indimenticabile concerto, unica tappa italiana del breve tour europeo di un inedito e straordinario duo.

A few months after the release of «Live in Mestre Venezia 1984»—an album documenting the standards performed by the duo of Mal Waldron and Sam Rivers during their concert on 15^th February 1984, at Toniolo Theatre in Mestre (Venezia), Italy—and following the enthusiastic response received from jazz fans all over the world, we decided to make public the final moment of that magical evening as well: the extended encore that brought it to a close. On that occasion, Breeze was performed —one of Rivers’ most representative compositions and the only original piece in the entire concert. While throughout the long set dedicated to standards Rivers had played exclusively the tenor sax, here he displays his full talent as a multi–instrumentalist, moving effortlessly from soprano sax to flute —both instruments being integral to his musical language, especially in live performances. The music seems to open up to freer and more expansive solutions, bringing back into focus that exploratory spirit which had established him as one of the leading voices of the avant–garde in the previous decade. Supporting him through his long and inspired solo flights is always Mal Waldron’s solid and hypnotic piano. The release of Breeze completes the documentation of that unforgettable concert, the only Italian date of the short European tour by an unreleased and extraordinary duo.
