Luca Zennaro, classe 1997, conferma di essere uno dei più originali giovani talenti del jazz italiano con «Stua scura», suo quinto album da leader, quarto per Caligola, dopo «Javaskara», «When Nobody Is Listening» e «Altera Limes». Ma non va dimenticato il lavoro svolto all’interno di HackOut! – di cui condivide la leadership con Manuel Caliumi e Riccardo Cocetti – trio che ha tre dischi alle spalle. Secondo il chitarrista di Chioggia «Stua scura» è l’espressione di un paesaggio sonoro: rappresenta l’unione tra il fuoco primordiale e l’oscurità sensoriale. La stufa (“stua”) è qui intesa come un luogo di calore e concentrazione, uno spazio intimo in cui il suono non abbaglia ma avvolge. Il progetto è costruito attorno alla ricchezza armonica e alla potenza evocativa degli strumenti dell’organico, scelti per creare un continuum timbrico “caldo–scuro”. Risulta ideale a tal fine il quartetto allestito per l’occasione, completato da tre musicisti e amici altrettanto giovani e talentuosi, ovvero Francesco Panconesi al sax tenore, Federico Calcagno al clarinetto basso e Mattia Galeotti alla batteria. I timbri gravi di clarinetto basso e sax tenore, la chitarra essenziale ed una batteria attenta ai colori, costruiscono una musica che brucia lentamente, fatta di tensioni sottili e di ascolto profondo. Tutti i brani, composti da Luca Zennaro, prendono forma in un ambiente sonoro caldo e misterioso; la scrittura, quando serve, lascia spazio all’improvvisazione ed ogni nota ha così il tempo di sedimentare. Non c’è urgenza, ma attenzione al respiro degli strumenti, al silenzio, alle sfumature. In ogni traccia è riconoscibile la già matura e personale cifra compositiva del leader che, utilizzando in molti dei titoli il dialetto, rende ancor più esplicito il legame con la sua città natale. Se si esclude la concitata Sweet Techno Raver, i toni sono per lo più pacati e riflessivi, come quelli dell’iniziale Play It Louder, Next Time, delle due versioni di Stravedamento o del brano che dà il titolo all’album. Non dobbiamo farci ingannare da una musica che parte spesso in punta di piedi, come succede per esempio con il delicato arpeggio della chitarra in Straniarse, ma che poi si accende con un rovente crescendo del sax tenore di Panconesi.

Luca Zennaro, born in 1997, confirms himself as one of the most original young talents in Italian jazz with «Stua scura», his fifth album as a leader and fourth for Caligola, following «Javaskara», «When Nobody Is Listening» and «Altera Limes». But the work carried out within HackOut! — whose leadership he shares with Manuel Caliumi and Riccardo Cocetti — should not be forgotten; the trio already has three albums to its name. According to the guitarist from Chioggia, «Stua scura» is the expression of a sound landscape: it represents the union between primordial fire and sensory darkness. The "stua" (stove) is here understood as a place of warmth and concentration, an intimate space where the sound doesn't dazzle but envelops. The project is built around the harmonic richness and evocative power of the instruments in the lineup, chosen to create a warm-dark timbral continuum. Ideal for this purpose is the quartet assembled for the occasion, completed by three equally young and talented musician friends: Francesco Panconesi on tenor sax, Federico Calcagno on bass clarinet, and Mattia Galeotti on drums. The low timbres of bass clarinet and tenor sax, the essential guitar, and drumming attentive to color combine to build a music that burns slowly, made of subtle tensions and deep listening. All the tracks, composed by Luca Zennaro, take shape within a warm and mysterious sonic environment; the writing, where needed, leaves room for improvisation, and every note thus has time to settle. There is no urgency, but rather attention to the breathing of the instruments, to silence, to nuance. In every track one recognizes the already mature and personal compositional voice of the leader who, by using dialect in many of the titles, makes the bond with his hometown even more explicit. Apart from the agitated Sweet Techno Raver, the tones are mostly calm and reflective, as in the opening Play It Louder, Next Time, the two versions of Stravedamento, or the title track. We shouldn't be fooled by music that often starts on tiptoe, as happens for instance with the delicate guitar arpeggio in Straniarse, but which then ignites with a blazing crescendo from Panconesi's tenor sax.
