Luc Mabal è un progetto nato dall’unione di quattro musicisti attivi nell’area di Trieste, con alle spalle diverse esperienze artistiche: i trascorsi new wave e alternative rock dei Luc Orient (Piero Pieri, Rrok Prennushi), le influenze etniche afro–cubane di Maurilio Balzanelli (già Doc Mabal), e il jazz insieme alle capacità di arrangiamento di Riccardo Morpurgo. Il nome del gruppo ne fonde in qualche modo le identità. Il risultato di questa eterogenea combinazione rivela una capacità creativa fuori dal comune, che trova finalmente realizzazione in «Mali Bolivia»: un crossover di generi fondato su brani raffinati e accattivanti, ma al tempo stesso ricchi di complessità di linguaggio e profondità espressiva. L’album è stato preparato in ogni dettaglio ed è il frutto di almeno due anni di minuzioso lavoro. Una sorprendente alternanza di momenti musicali diversi attraversa ciascuna composizione: si passa dall’esposizione dei temi alle entrate improvvise di voci e parti corali, aprendo lo spazio sia a zone di improvvisazione sia a segmenti di canzone. Il suono è caldo e avvolgente, grazie all’alchimia che unisce i beat elettronici alle percussioni acustiche, le sequenze di synth alle tastiere vintage, la chitarra modernista ai temi larghi del sassofono, gli assoli aggressivi al lirismo del pianoforte, le influenze africane a suggestioni più urbane. Su questa fitta trama musicale la voce intesse tessiture delicate e intimiste attraverso testi poetici ed evocativi, tutti in inglese, con le uniche eccezioni rappresentate dalla strumentale The Ancestors e da Mare mia, cantata in dialetto triestino. Quest’ultima è un omaggio di Piero Pieri — autore di tutti i testi e, in questo caso, anche unico compositore della musica — alla bora: non un semplice vento, ma ciò che essa rappresenta nell’esperienza e nell’immaginario della gente di Trieste. La musica dei Luc Mabal è un flusso che talvolta rimanda alla world music, talvolta alla gloriosa epopea del progressive rock, ma resta sempre innervata da un solido groove, da una nuova freschezza e da uno spirito costante di ricerca.

Luc Mabal is a project born from the collaboration of four musicians active in the Trieste area, each bringing a distinct artistic background: the new wave and alternative rock roots of Luc Orient members Piero Pieri and Rrok Prennushi, the Afro-Cuban ethnic influences of Maurilio Balzanelli (formerly Doc Mabal), and the jazz sensibility and arranging skills of Riccardo Morpurgo. The name of the project itself blends these different identities. The result of this heterogeneous combination reveals an uncommon creative energy, fully realized in «Mali Bolivia»: a crossover of genres built on refined yet engaging compositions, combining accessibility with musical complexity and emotional depth. The album was crafted with meticulous care and is the outcome of at least two years of detailed work. Each composition unfolds through a surprising alternation of musical moments: thematic statements give way to sudden vocal and choral entries, opening up both to areas of improvisation and to more structured song segments. The sound is warm and enveloping, thanks to an alchemy that blends electronic beats with acoustic percussion, synth sequences with vintage keyboards, modernist guitar lines with the broad themes of the saxophone, aggressive solos with the lyricism of the piano, and African influences with more urban suggestions. Over this dense musical texture, the voice weaves delicate and intimate lines through poetic and evocative lyrics. All texts are in English, with the only exceptions being the instrumental The Ancestors and Mare mia, sung in the Triestine dialect. The latter is a tribute by Piero Pieri — author of all the lyrics and, in this case, also the sole composer — to the bora, not simply a wind but a powerful presence in the everyday life and collective imagination of the people of Trieste. Luc Mabal’s music flows freely between echoes of world music and the glorious legacy of progressive rock, while remaining rooted in a solid groove, a sense of freshness, and a constant spirit of exploration.
