I musicisti di jazz preferiscono di solito fissare la loro musica in studio, utilizzando le più sofisticate tecnologie digitali per perfezionare e correggere i brani registrati. L'editing è una pratica comune che permette loro di pubblicare un lavoro solo quando ne sono pienamente soddisfatti. Tuttavia alcuni dischi dal vivo, pur con inevitabili imperfezioni nella ripresa sonora, riescono a trasmettere le stesse forti emozioni che si provano soltanto durante un concerto particolarmente riuscito. Non ci si deve quindi sorprendere se album come quelli registrati da Bill Evans al Village Vanguard (1961) e da Miles Davis alla Philarmonic Hall (1964) siano considerati delle pietre miliari nella storia del jazz. Questa registrazione, rigorosamente dal vivo, cattura una serata magica di un gruppo solido e affiatato, che trasuda energia da ogni poro. Nonostante alcuni dei suoi componenti siano compositori e leader di progetti originali il gruppo, attivo da qualche anno, ha scelto di eseguire soltanto brani di quel grande Songbook americano, classico e moderno, comune alla maggior parte dei jazzisti. Nessuno dei componenti di questa sorta di Standard Quartet ha bisogno di presentazioni, specie Dario Carnovale e Michele Polga, quest’ultimo considerato da tempo fra i più personali e talentuosi tenorsassofonisti della scena italiana. Un sassofono lucido e profondo il suo, ma allo stesso tempo morbido e suadente, che flirta con la tradizione in splendide ballad come Body and Soul e Darn That Dream. Non è forse un caso che ben quattro degli otto brani scelti per questa vibrante esibizione siano stati composti da tre maestri del sax tenore come Wayne Shorter (decisamente riuscite le versioni sia di Black Nile, brano d’apertura che è un po’ il manifesto dell’album, che della modale Yes or No), Joe Henderson e Frank Foster. Michele Polga, Dario Carnovale, Pasquale Fiore e Lorenzo Conte – che rende a sua volta omaggio a Paul Chambers, gigante del contrabbasso, suo modello e fonte d’ispirazione, con una coinvolgente versione di Whims of Chambers – suonano con un grande senso dell'equilibrio, un invidiabile interplay e la giusta dose di furia espressiva. Un vero e proprio «Big Pulse», come opportunamente recita il titolo.

Jazz musicians usually choose to record their music in the studio and use state–of–the–art digital tools to perfect and, if necessary, correct their tracks. Editing is common practice that allows them to release a project only when they are fully satisfied with it. Nonetheless, some live albums convey the same emotions felt at great concerts despite the inevitable flaws, hence Bill Evans’ album recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1961 and Miles Davis’ recorded at the Philharmonic Hall in 1964 are considered landmarks in the history of jazz. «Big Pulse», recorded rigorously live, captures the magical night of a solid, close–knit band that exudes energy. Although some members are composers and leaders of original projects of their own the group, which has been performing for a few years, chose to play only songs of the Great American Songbook, both classic and modern and recorded by most jazz musicians. The musicians of this “Standard Quartet” need no introduction, especially Dario Carnovale and Michele Polga, the latter hailed as one of the most original and talented Italian saxophonists of the past twenty years. His tenor sax is as crystal clear and deep as it is soft and mellow, and it plays with tradition in wonderful ballads like Body and Soul and Darn That Dream. It’s not by chance that four out of the eight tracks picked for this vibrant performance are composed by legends of tenor sax like Joe Henderson, Frank Foster and Wayne Shorter (Black Nile, both the album opener and a sort of manifesto of the album, and the modal Yes or No are excellent renditions). Michele Polga, Dario Carnovale, Pasquale Fiore and Lorenzo Conte – the latter pays tribute to Paul Chambers, a master of double bass and his source of inspiration, with a compelling interpretation of Whims of Chambers – play using balance, an enviable interplay, and the right amount of expressive fury. A veritable «Big Pulse» as the album is fittingly titled.
