A tre anni dal riuscito «The Last Coat of Pink», il trio composto da Kathya West, Alberto Dipace e Danilo Gallo prosegue la sua personale rielaborazione del repertorio della produzione pop (o rock, se preferite) più originale e creativa, passando dai Pink Floyd ad una più recente icona della popular music, la cantautrice Björk, senza dubbio fra le artiste più innovative e visionarie degli ultimi trent’anni.
Il trio, dopo aver proposto molte volte dal vivo il progetto dedicato alla celebre band britannica, ha ora deciso di far diventare nome del gruppo, ormai stabile, il titolo del primo album. Il loro tributo – ma forse è più corretto parlare di personale reinterpretazione dei brani, come il jazz usa fare con gli standard – all’artista islandese è intimo e cameristico, originale ma allo stesso tempo rispettoso della struttura musicale di canzoni che fanno ormai parte della storia del pop. L’interplay del trio è cresciuto notevolmente, consentendo alla voce di Kathya West – che fra tutti ha forse il compito più arduo, per l’inevitabile paragone con una personalità della caratura di Björk cui verrà sottoposta – di muoversi fra trame ritmico–armoniche collaudate e sicure, prendendosi le necessarie libertà interpretative, sapendo che ci saranno il puntuale pianoforte di Alberto Dipace ed il solido contrabbasso di Danilo Gallo in ogni momento a supportarla. Non siamo esagerati se affermiamo che la sua è davvero una delle voci più raffinate, sensibili e complete della scena jazzistica italiana. Canzoni come Joga, Stonemilker o Pleasure Is All Mine sembrano trovare nuova vita in questo nuovo progetto, tanto unico quanto audace. La musica non ha bisogno di urlare per farsi sentire: i sussurri sono in questo caso più rumorosi ed efficaci delle grida. «Water’s Break» è un album che conferma sia l’originalità dell’idea perseguita con coerenza e rigore dai tre musicisti, sia la definitiva nascita di una formazione musicale che, ne siamo certi, continuerà a farsi apprezzare da pubblico e critica.

Three years after the acclaimed «The Last Coat of Pink», the trio consisting of Kathya West, Alberto Dipace and Danilo Gallo, continues its personal interpretation of the most original, creative pop–rock repertoire, from Pink Floyd to a more recent popular music icon, singer–songwriter Björk, who is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and visionary artists of the last thirty years. The trio, who has frequently performed in a project dedicated to the influential English band, decided to use the title of its first album as the band’s name. Its intimate tribute – maybe it is better to talk about a personal interpretation of songs, as jazz does with standards – to the Icelandic artist is innovative and has a chamber–music taste to it, but it is also respectful of the structure of songs that are now part of the history of pop. The trio’s interplay has significantly improved and allows the voice of Kathya West – who’s perhaps the one with the most arduous task because of the inevitable comparison with a personality like Björk’s – to move between tested rhythms and harmonies patterns and have freedom when interpreting lyrics. She knows the precise piano of Alberto Dipace and the solid double bass of Danilo Gallo will always be there to back her up. We are not exaggerating when we say she is one of the most refined, sensible and complete voices of Italian jazz. Songs like Joga, Stonemilker and Pleasure Is All Mine seem to get a new life in this new project, which is unique as it is bold. Music does not need to be loud to be heard: whispers are noisier and more effective than shouts here. «Water’s Break» proves both the originality of the idea pursued by the three musicians with consistency and accuracy, and the definitive birth of a band that will surely continue to be appreciated by critics and audiences.
