Jazz Fantasy è un trio paritetico composto dal pianista bolzanino Michele Giro, da Norbert Dalsass,
contrabbasso, e Roman Hinteregger, batteria, entrambi di Bressanone. È attivo sin dal 1993 ma si
dovranno aspettare ben cinque anni per «Undiscovered Hit’s», debutto discografico che si giova della
presenza di tre ospiti, tra cui il celebre trombettista svizzero Franco Ambrosetti. Con «Modus» nel 2000 e «Every Breath We Take» nel 2005, in cui vengono reinterpretati brani di Sting, Jazz Fantasy torna alla
collaudata formula del trio. Nel 2007 ritorna a far parlare di sé con «Between», che vede ancora l’aggiunta di tre fiati, Ambrosetti compreso. Seguirà un lungo silenzio discografico, ma non concertistico, perché il trio altoatesino, a differenza di quello che si potrebbe pensare, non si è mai sciolto. A distanza di quindici anni e dopo il lungo silenzio a cui li ha obbligati la pandemia, i tre musicisti sentono l’esigenza di entrare in studio di registrazione e quel che ne esce è questo splendido «Still», pubblicato nel 2023 per celebrare i 30 anni di attività del gruppo. Si inizia con il brano lento e sospeso che dà il titolo al disco, una melodia semplice, ipnotica e meditativa firmata da Dalsass, e si passa subito dopo allo swing sostenuto di Speedway, introdotta da un efficace solo di Hinteregger, con il contrabbasso in evidenza ed il pianoforte di Giro capace di sconfinare nel free senza mai perdere il bandolo della matassa. Gli accordi aperti e circolari, quasi aerei delle tastiere ci conducono per mano dentro l’onirica New Dream, in un clima di fusion raffinata, così come la cantabile Nichts e la successiva For Marchin sembrano ricordare l’Esbjörn Svensson Trio. L’eterea e sognante Peace Convention è la riuscita ripresa di un brano che Dalsass aveva già proposto nel suo ultimo lavoro, «Albatros», mentre con Reloaded e SiBiMax è ancora il tastierista a farci respirare gli odori più intensi e decisi del jazz prima che il tema intimo, quasi sussurrato di Shadows in the Night chiuda questo viaggio sempre vario e stimolante riportandoci a dove eravamo partiti, nel magico silenzio di una splendida notte stellata.

Jazz Fantasy is a homogeneous trio consisting of pianist from Bolzano Michele Giro, bassist Norbert Dalsass and drummer Roman Hinteregger – both from Brixen. The trio has been making music since 1993, but its debut album «Undiscovered Hit’s» was only released five years later and was recorded with three guests including the famous Swiss trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti. With «Modus» (2000) and «Every Breath We Take» (2005), where it interpreted Sting’ s songs, Jazz Fantasy went back to the trio formula. In 2007 it was back with «Between» and three wind instruments played on it, still including Ambrosetti. A hiatus followed shortly after but only in album–making and not in concerts: contrary to what one may think, the trio never disbanded. Fifteen years later and after the long silence forced upon by the pandemic, the three musicians felt the urge to go to the studio and the outcome was «Still», a great album released in 2023 to celebrate the band’s thirty–year career. The album starts with the slow, floating title–track whose simple, hypnotic, and thoughtful melody was composed by Dalsass; it then continues with the swing of Speedway introduced by Dalsass’ excellent solo, with the bass in the foreground and Giro’s piano that crosses over to free jazz without losing the thread. The open, circular, and almost airy chords on the keyboards carry us to the dreamlike New Dream in a refined fusion atmosphere just like the singable Nichts and For Marchin recall Esbjörn Svensson Trio. The unworldly, dreamy Peace Convention reprises a track Dalsass already included in his previous album, «Albatross», while in Reloaded and SiBiMax the keyboardist is still the one who lets us taste the strongest, most intense jazz before Shadows in the Night’s intimate, whispery theme ends the exciting journey and takes us right back where we started, in the magical silence of a wonderful starry night.
