Pochi appassionati conoscono Gileno Santana, giovane talentuoso trombettista
brasiliano nato il 5 maggio 1988 a Salvador da Bahia e dal 2005 stabilitosi in
Portogallo. Qualcuno l’ha però già apprezzato all’interno di poLO, quartetto
guidato da Andrea Lombardini e Paolo Porta («Pleasures», Auand Records). Dal
2003 Santana si è trasferito a Fortaleza, decidendo, dopo appena due anni, di
proseguire i suoi studi musicali in Portogallo, dove ha studiato con João Moreira,
diplomandosi al Conservatorio di Lisbona. E’ diventato prima tromba della
Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra, grazie a cui ha avuto occasione di lavorare con Kurt
Rosenwinkel e Maria Schneider, e di incidere con Maria Joao. Alla fine del 2011
ha pubblicato il suo disco album da leader, «Inicio», in quartetto, con ospite
Hamilton De Holanda. Santana vive oggi a Porto, dove anche insegna. A tre anni
dall’album del debutto, sembra sia finalmente giunto il tempo per lui di
raccogliere i frutti di quanto seminato, e questo «Metamorphosis», registrato nel
2012 ma ripreso, editato, mixato e masterizzato nel marzo 2014, non passerà
certamente inosservato. In quella che si presenta come una sorta di unica lunga
suite, trovano spazio l’improvvisazione, a tratti molto libera, un sapiente uso
dell’elettronica, richiami all’ultimo Miles Davis (Shadow of power e I’m not
Miles–Tarabbia su tutti), ma soprattutto una freschezza ed una spontaneità capaci
di mettere in secondo piano il suo pur celebrato virtuosismo. Danno un prezioso
contributo alla riuscita del lavoro, oltre che la sapiente chitarra di Miguel
Moreira, i fedelissimi Joaquim Rodrigues, Josè Carlos Barbosa e Mario Costa,
presenti anche in «Inicio», ma qui riconvertiti di buon grado al nuovo sound
elettrico del leader.

Few jazz fans know Gileno Santana, a young talented Brazilian trumpeter born on
May 5, 1987 in Salvador de Bahia and settled in Portugal from 2005. Someone,
however, already appreciated him in poLO, a quartet led by Andrea Lombardini
and Paolo Porta («Pleasures», Auand Records). In 2003 Santana moved to
Fortaleza, deciding, after just two years, to continue his musical studies in
Portugal, where he studied with João Moreira and graduated from the
Conservatory of Lisbon. He became first trumpet in Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra,
thanks to which he had the opportunity to work with Kurt Rosenwinkel and Maria
Schneider, and to record with Maria Joao. At the end of 2011 he released his first
album as a leader, «Inicio», in quartet, with Hamilton De Holanda as a guest.
Santana now lives in Porto, where he also teaches. Three years after the debut
album, the time has come for him to finally reap the benefits of his work, and this
«Metamorphosis», recorded in 2012 but resumed, edited, mixed and mastered in
March 2014, will not go unnoticed. In what looks like a kind of long one suite,
there is room for improvisation, sometimes very free, for a clever use of
electronics, for references to the last Miles Davis (especially Shadow of power and
I’m not Miles–Tarabbia), but also for a freshness and spontaneity that can
overshadow even his praised virtuosity. A precious contribution to the success of
this work is given by, besides the skillful guitar of Miguel Moreira, the devotees
Joaquim Rodrigues, José Carlos Barbosa & Mario Costa, also present in
«Inicio», but here willingly converted to the new electric sound of the leader.
