«Six Friends for Bicio» è un progetto dedicato a Maurizio Caldura Núñez, per gli amici “Bicio”, morto nel 1998 a soli 39 anni e considerato fra i più talentuosi sassofonisti italiani di sempre. È un tributo fortemente voluto dal pianista Marcello Tonolo, suo caro amico e collaboratore, per far sì che la sua musica non venga dimenticata. I due jazzisti hanno condiviso dischi e palcoscenici importanti, anche negli Stati Uniti. Caldura è stato molto attivo a partire dalla seconda metà degli anni ’80, suonando con Giorgio Gaslini e collaborando con Lanfranco Malaguti, Mimmo Cafiero e Tiziana Ghiglioni. Ha anche fatto parte del Matt Jazz Quintet del pianista Luca Flores, e della Keptorchestra, di cui è stato cofondatore insieme a Pietro e Marcello Tonolo, big band che ha inciso tre album e ospitato musicisti del calibro di Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano e Steve Lacy. A questo progetto ha collaborato il sassofonista Michele Polga, il miglior allievo di Caldura, che è stato anche un apprezzato didatta. Polga ha voluto dedicare al maestro Núñez Dance, ballad inserita nel repertorio del sestetto, che per il resto esegue solo composizioni del sassofonista scomparso, fra cui vanno ricordate almeno l’ipnotico samba di Goofy’s Dance, la delicata bossa di Amigavel, il mingusiano Bradipo e la rutilante Groovin’ Jones. Dei nove brani Weeping Radish, presente in un disco registrato con Paul Jeffrey al di là dell’oceano, viene qui eseguito dal solo trio senza la sezione dei fiati, mentre Mr PJ, dedicato a Paul Jeffrey, non è mai stato registrato prima. Completano il sestetto – che si rifà all’ultimo guidato da Caldura nell’album «Murrina Latina» – oltre che Polga e Tonolo, che ne era il pianista, altri suoi due componenti originari, Roberto Rossi e Marc Abrams. Ci sono poi il trombettista Giampaolo Casati, al posto del mai dimenticato Marco Tamburini – ma già allora l’aveva spesso sostituito – ed il giovane Enrico Smiderle (nel disco cui si fa riferimento il batterista era invece Paolo Pellegatti). Se l’obiettivo è quello di riportare l’attenzione su un importante jazzista troppo presto dimenticato, siamo certi che con «Six Friends for Bicio» verrà raggiunto.

«Six Friends for Bicio» is a project dedicated to Maurizio Caldura Núñez, nicknamed Bicio, who passed away in 1998 aged just 39 and is considered one of the most talented Italian saxophonists of all time. It’s a tribute his dear friend and collaborator Marcello Tonolo strongly wanted to ensure Caldura’s music is never forgotten. The two jazz musicians shared important albums and stages, including in the United States. Caldura had been on the jazz scene since the mid–Eighties, and he played with Giorgio Gaslini and collaborated with Lanfranco Malaguti, Mimmo Cafiero and Tiziana Ghiglioni. He was also a member of pianist Luca Flores’ Matt Jazz Quintet and Keptorchestra, the big band he co–founded with Pietro and Marcello Tonolo and with which he recorded three albums and featured the likes of Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano and Steve Lacy. Caldura was also a respected teacher and Michele Polga, his best pupil, collaborated on this project. The ballad Núñez Dance, dedicated by Polga to his master, has been included in the repertoire of the sextet that only performs tunes composed by the late saxophonist on the rest of the album. It’s worth mentioning the hypnotic samba of Goofy’s Dance, the delicate bossa of Amigável, the Mingus–inspired Bradipo and the glowing Groovin’ Jones. Out of the nine tracks Weeping Radish, which was already on an album recorded with Paul Jeffrey in the United States, is played by the trio without the winds. Mr. PJ, dedicated to Paul Jeffrey, was never recorded before. The sextet recalls the one Caldura led on the «Murrina Latina» album and is made up of Polga, Tonolo, and the other original members Roberto Rossi and Marc Abrams. There are also trumpeter Giampaolo Casati who took the place of the never forgotten Marco Tamburini – even though he had already replaced him on other occasions – and the promising Enrico Smiderle (on the aforementioned album the drummer was actually Paolo Pellegatti). If the goal was to bring the attention back to a respected jazz musician who was too quickly forgotten, then with «Six Friends for Bicio» it is achieved.
