Registrato tre anni dopo «Aspiciens Pulchritudinem», suo primo album di piano solo, «Skies of Sea» mette in mostra i rimarchevoli progressi compiuti in questo lasso di tempo dal musicista siracusano, sia per quel che concerne la tecnica strumentale che il linguaggio espressivo, sempre più maturo e personale. Dopo esser stato per almeno un trentennio fra i più apprezzati batteristi jazz italiani, Francesco Branciamore aveva ancor meglio messo in luce le sue qualità di compositore e arrangiatore in «Remembering B.E.», disco in cui non suona alcuno strumento ma rende omaggio a Bill Evans dirigendo un sestetto cameristico, e dimostra ora che l’inaspettata e coraggiosa prova pianistica del 2018 non è stata affatto una parentesi estemporanea nel suo percorso artistico. Lo fa con un secondo ed ancora più convincente album solitario, registrato nel medesimo studio e con lo stesso pianoforte. I due anni di forzata clausura per la pandemia gli hanno consentito di affinare ulteriormente la sua tecnica pianistica, grazie ad una costante pratica strumentale, ma anche di mettere a punto nuovi ed interessanti spunti musicali. «Skies of Sea» si presenta come una sorta di suite, divisa in quattordici brevi e pregnanti bozzetti pianistici di durata compresa fra i due ed i tre minuti e mezzo, capaci di toccare le atmosfere più diverse, dall’ipnotico e suggestivo brano che dà il titolo al disco al toccante e riuscito omaggio a Chick Corea di A Prayer for Chick. Queste quattordici preziose gemme confermano come la ricerca introspettiva e la riflessione continuino a rappresentare gli assi portanti della musica di Branciamore, cui il termine jazz sembra andare sempre più stretto. Difficile stilare una graduatoria, ma ci piace ricordare ancora l’intimo e meditativo Deep Inside, quasi un largo, così come la melodia cantabile di The Remaining Time o l’accorato lirismo di Soul Touch. L’incalzante incedere ritmico del finale With Eyes on the Sky sembra rappresentare sia il naturale sviluppo del brano iniziale che l’ideale chiusura di un album fortemente evocativo, che non sembra lasciar nulla al caso.

Recorded three years after his first solo piano album «Aspiciens Pulchritudinem», «Skies of Sea» showcases the great strides the musician from Siracusa has made over this time frame in his instrumental technique as well as his expressive style, more and more mature and personal. Besides having been one the most appreciated Italian jazz drummers for at least thirty years, Francesco Branciamore highlighted even more his talent as composer and arranger in «Remembering B.E.»,
an album where he plays no instrument but pays tribute to Bill Evans by conducting a chamber music sextet and now proves the unexpected, brave piano test in 2018 wasn’t an extemporaneous pause in his artistic career at all. He has proved that with his second, even more impressive solo album recorded at the same studio and with the same piano. The past two years of forced reclusion due to the pandemic have allowed him to further hone his piano skills thanks to consistent practice, but also to fine-tune new, interesting musical ideas. «Skies of Sea» is introduced as a sort of suite divided into fourteen short, intense piano sketches lasting between two–and–a–half and three minutes. They manage to touch upon the most diverse kinds of atmospheres, from the hypnotic, evocative title–track to A Prayer for Chick, a touching tribute to Chick Corea. Such fourteen gems prove how his introspection and reflection keep standing as pivots to Branciamore’s music, to whom the word ”jazz” is becoming more and more limiting. It’s pretty hard to draw up a ranking, but we’d like to mention again the intimate, meditative Deep Inside, almost a largo, as well as the cantabile melody The Remaining Time or the heartfelt lyricism of Soul Touch. The pressing rhythm of the final track With Eyes on the Sky sounds like the natural evolution of the opening track as well as the ideal closure of a strongly evocative album where nothing seems left to chance.
