Se questo per la vocalist veneta, attiva dal 1997, non é il primo disco, è
di certo quello dove per la prima volta si assume per intero e da sola la
responsabilità artistico–musicale del progetto. Nel pur
importante «Silver friends», del 2002, oneri ed onori – venne segnalata
nel 2003 tra i migliori nuovi talenti nel referendum del mensile Musica
Jazz – erano infatti equamente divisi con il sassofonista Ettore
Martin. «The grace of Gryce», album che giunge nel pieno della
maturità artistica, é invece interamente e soltanto suo; colma un vuoto
discografico inconsueto in un periodo in cui le produzioni sono spesso
sin troppo numerose, fissando non solo la caratura di un talento vocale
che ha pochi rivali nel nostro paese (contagiosa la sua improvvisazione
“scat”, superbo il suo senso dello swing), ma anche la crescita e la
coesione di un gruppo, il trio completato da Beppe Pilotto e Marco
Carlesso, che “canta” e “suona” come fosse un unico strumento.
Francesca Bertazzo Hart, docente assai apprezzata, è per di più
un’eccellente chitarrista, e sa accompagnarsi con gusto armonico e
sapienza ritmica assai raffinati. L’hanno certamente aiutata le lezioni
milanesi di Tiziana Ghiglioni e Francesca Oliveri, la quadriennale
parentesi newyorkese (1997–2001) ed il lavoro di assistente ai seminari
tenuti da celebri vocalist americane, Sheila Jordan e Amy London su
tutte. Il resto (quasi tutto) lo deve alla sua caparbietà, al continuo studio,
all’esperienza, oltre che al suo talento, naturalmente. Il frutto di questa
costante ed esaltante crescita musicale è racchiuso nelle dieci
splendide tracce, scelte con intelligenza ed originalità, di «The grace of
Gryce», lavoro che dovrebbe finalmente darle tutti quei riconoscimenti
che merita. Al disco, piacevole ed equilibrato, danno un significativo
contributo ospiti–amici come il trombettista americano Kyle Gregory ed
il già citato Martin. Non sembrano quindi esagerate le parole con cui
Cameron Brown chiude le acute “liner notes” scritte per
il’album: «Francesca: che scoperta, che talento! Che proposta musicale
brillantemente concepita, varia e bilanciata! Band meravigliosa,
arrangiamenti fluidi, tutti sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda: uno
straordinario risultato!»

If this for the vocalist from Padova, active since 1997, isn’t her first Cd,
it’s an album which launches her for the first time as the project’s artistic
director. With the good «Silver friends» she was nominated in 2003 as
one of the best new talents by Musica Jazz magazine, but the
responsibilities and honors was equally divided with the sax player
Ettore Martin. «The grace of Gryce» on the contrary, an album which
determines her full musical maturity, is entirely her work; it fills an
unusual gap in a period full of new musical projects, showing not only
her vocal skill, that has very few rivals in Italy (her scat improvisation is
contagious, her sense of swing superb), but also the growth and
cohesion of the trio with Beppe Pilotto and Marco Carlesso, that “sings”
and “plays” as an only instrument. Francesca Bertazzo Hart, a well
appreciated teacher, is also an excellent guitarist, able to accompany
herself with very refined harmonic and rhythmic taste. Tiziana Ghiglioni
and Francesca Oliveri’s lessons in Milan have helped her growth as well
as the four years spent in New York (1997–2001) and her experience as
assistant in the stages of American singers such as Sheila Jordan and
Amy London. The rest (which is the bigger part of it) is due to her
obstinacy, continuous study and, of course, natural talent. Her constant
and amazing background gave birth to these ten wonderful tracks,
originally and intelligently chosen, an effort that should finally give to her
the deserved recognitions. American trumpeter Kyle Gregory and Ettore
Martin, guests but friends too, add a balanced and comforting tone to
the Cd. Cameron Brown’s subtle liner notes don’t seem to overstate
stating: “What a find, what a talent, what a brilliantly conceived, varied
and balanced musical offering; wonderful band, seamless
arrangements, everyone on the same page: a great accomplishment.”
