Nel deserto è facile perdersi, ma si può anche rischiare di ritrovarsi.
E' per questo che tanti se ne sono invaghiti. E se a Timbuctu i Dinamitri Jazz
Folklore hanno potuto ritrovare le radici musicali di una cultura antica come quella
tuareg per arrivare a toccarne l'essenza, allo stesso tempo si son dovuti rimettere
in gioco. La toscanità, l'identità aperta e il senso comunitario che ha reso questa
esperienza diversa da tante altre, sono state le chiavi di un incontro possibile.
Ecco perché emerge in questo disco “live” una doppia anima: da un lato la forte
spiritualità ritualistica, da sempre presente nel battito musicale del livornese
Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, sax alto, dall'altra il debordante vitalismo che lo ha
contagiato attraverso Ahmed Ag Kaedi degli Amanar, o gruppi come i Tartit
ed i Daktaris. L’obiettivo sembra essere quello di esplorare il linguaggio jazz
studiandone le connessioni con i diversi idiomi, e compiendo così una sorta di
cammino a ritroso: da Ornette Coleman al jazz modale, dal be–bop alle polifonie
di New Orleans, dal blues all’Africa. Attivo dal 1999, il gruppo pubblica nel 2000
«Vita Nova» (Philology), ma il suo potenziale si esprime appieno nel 2003 con il
secondo lavoro, «Folklore in black» (Caligola), che ha come ospite il clarinettista
Tony Scott. E se il terzo disco, «Congo Evidence» (Caligola), vede la presenza del
poeta neroamericano Sadiq Bey, nel successivo, «Akendengue Suite» (Rai
Trade), c’è l’ancor più celebre Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones), che compare ancora in
«Live in Sant’Anna Arresi 2013» (Rudi Records). Sempre per la stessa label i
Dinamitri Jazz Folklore pubblicano nel 2012 «La Società delle Maschere», che
segna l’inizio della collaborazione con il vocalist Piero Gesuè, valore aggiunto
anche in questo nuovo Cd. Di tutti i precedenti album, sempre molto attenti alle
suggestioni dell’Africa sahariana, questo è quello che coglie maggiormente il lato
giocoso del gruppo, in grado di essere profondo senza per questo apparire troppo
“serioso”. La dimensione legata maggiormente al ballo emerge soprattutto in
concerto, quando il pubblico diventa parte attiva dell’atto musicale.
E’ per questo che un disco come «Exwide – Live» era assolutamente necessario.

In the desert it is easy to get lost, but you can also risk to find yourself. That is why
many people fell for it. And if in Timbuktu the Dinamitri Jazz Folklore could find the
musical roots of an ancient and profound culture like the Tuareg’s one, in order to
get in touch with its essence, at the same time they had to get back in the game.
The “Tuscanity”, the open identity and sense of community that made this
experience different from many others, have been the keys to a possible
encounter. This is why a double personality emerges from this live record: on one
hand the strong ritualistic spirituality that has always been part of the musical beat
of Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, alto saxophonist from Livorno, on the other hand, the
overflowing vitality that has affected him through Ahmed Ag Kaedi from Amanar,
or bands as Tartit and Daktaris.The goal seems to be the study of the jazz
language, exploring its connections with different idioms, and making a sort of
backward journey: from Ornette Coleman to modal jazz, from bebop to the
polyphony of New Orleans, from blues to Africa. Active since 1999, the band
released in 2000 «Vita Nova» (Philology), but its potential was fully expressed in
2003 with the second work, «Folklore in black» (Caligola), with clarinetist Tony
Scott as a guest And if the third record, «Congo Evidence» (Caligola), boasts the
presence of African American poet Sadiq Bey, in the following «Akendengue
Suite» (Rai Trade), there is the even more famous Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones),
who also appears in «Live in Sant’Anna Arresi 2013» (Rudi Records). For the
same label the Dinamitri Jazz Folklore published in 2012 «La Società delle
Maschere», which marks the beginning of the collaboration with vocalist Piero
Gesuè, an added value also to this new compact-disc. Of all the previous albums,
always very sensitive to suggestions from Saharan Africa, this is the one that best
captures the playful side of the band, being deep without appearing too “staid”.
The aspect more closely linked to dance is especially evident in live concerts,
when the audience becomes an active part of the musical act. And that is why a
record as «Exwide Live» was absolutely necessary.
