Danilo Cubuzio, pianista bolognese perfezionatosi al conservatorio di Rovigo sotto la guida di Stefano Onorati, non giunge giovanissimo alla sua prima prova da leader, ma lo fa nel migliore dei modi, regalandoci un album intenso ed equilibrato, ricco di spunti interessanti. D’altro canto il Nostro – che da qualche anno si è trasferito nell’area veneziana – aveva deciso di approfondire lo studio del pianoforte quand’era già adulto, abbandonando per questo gli studi universitari. Il quartetto qui impegnato è costituito da amici sodali, tutti già studenti del dipartimento jazz rodigino, e forse per questo è riuscito a metter a punto, non senza lungo e paziente lavoro, un interplay davvero invidiabile. Ognuno dei quattro musicisti si mette al servizio del collettivo, e ciò consente di proporre atmosfere musicali sempre diverse, abbandonando gli utili ma rigidi schemi appresi nel corso degli studi per cercare di perseguire strade nuove e coraggiose. Comune a tutti è la volontà di mettersi in gioco e di non arrendersi, anche a costo di rischiare qualcosa: quello che conta, alla fine, è riuscire a concedersi sempre “un’altra opportunità”, per parafrasare il titolo del disco. Tutte e sei i brani sono stati composti dal leader durante il difficile periodo del Covid. Aperto da un’incalzante introduzione del contrabbasso di Alberto Paggin, Time for Gratification sembra essere il perfetto prologo di un percorso musicale in grado di raggiungere un intenso climax già nella riflessiva In the Morning, arricchita dalla presenza del prezioso sax tenore di Alberto Vianello ed illuminata da un riuscito assolo della chitarra di Giuseppe A. Russo. I due strumenti armonici non solo non entrano mai in conflitto, ma arricchiscono con senso della misura le fitte trame melodico–armoniche sia del cantabile tre quarti di Monday Waltz, che del tema che dà il titolo all’album o dell’ipnotico e danzante African Shoro. L’intesa pressoché perfetta del quartetto trova conferma nella lirica e nostalgica Second Song, splendida chiosa finale di «Another Opportunity». I riferimenti musicali di Cubuzio sono numerosi e diversificati, ma su tutti qui sembrano prevalere i richiami a Kenny Wheeler.

Danilo Cubuzio, a pianist from Bologna who honed his skills at the Rovigo Conservatory of Music under Stefano Onorati’s guidance, may be regarded as a late bloomer when it comes to his first experience as a leader; yet, he does it in the best possible way and treats us to an intense, harmonious album replete with interesting suggestions. After all, the pianist – who moved to the Venice area a few years ago – decided to continue studying piano as a grown-up, dropping out of university to pursue that. The quartet that played on the album consists of close friends who studied at the jazz department in Rovigo; perhaps that’s the reason why he managed to create an enviable interplay after a long, patient work. Each of the four musicians supports the group and that helps create varied musical atmospheres by leaving behind the valuable, yet rigid patterns learned while studying in order to take new, braver paths. What they all share is the willingness to stretch themselves and never give up, even if that entails risking something: what really matters at the end is always giving oneself “another opportunity”, to quote the album title. All the six tracks were composed by Cubuzio during the Covid pandemic. Time for Gratification starts with Alberto Paggin’s throbbing introduction on double bass and sounds like the perfect prologue to a musical path that reaches its climax in the pensive In the Morning. The song is enriched by Alberto Vianello’s precious tenor sax and brightened by an excellent guitar solo by Giuseppe A. Russo. Not only the two harmonic instruments never clash, but they enrich with a sense of proportion the complex melody and harmony of the cantabile 3/4 of Monday Waltz, the title–track, Another Opportunity, and the hypnotic, danceable African Shoro. The quartet’s perfect harmony is proven in the lyrical, nostalgic Second Song, the wonderful album closer. Cubuzio’s influences are plenty and varied, but the references to Kenny Wheeler prevail.
