Il rapporto, sin qui proficuo e dialettico, tra Claudio Cojaniz e Caligola è
nato nel 2004 con «War orphans», duo con Giancarlo Schiaffini; «The
heart of the Universe» è il sesto disco pubblicato per la nostra etichetta
dal pianista friulano, classe 1952. Ci sono stati un piano–solo, un altro
duo, con Francesco Bearzatti, la NION Orchestra, un solo di organo, ed
ecco finalmente arrivare, particolarmente atteso, un nuovo lavoro in trio,
formazione che come si sa rappresenta un passaggio irrinunciabile per
qualsiasi pianista jazz. Atteso anche perché giunge dieci anni
dopo «Romantic circle» (Splasch), album in cui era affiancato da Carlo
Franceschinis e Nello Da Pont. Differente la situazione, diversi i
musicisti chiamati a sostenerne i voli solistici, ma identici lo spirito, la
passione e le fonti d’ispirazione, anche se la maturità e l’equilibrio
raggiunti sembrano un poco stemperarne il furore espressivo. Ancora
più alti invece la poesia, la capacità di sintesi, l’originalità. Se i numi
tutelari sono ancora quelli di Ellington e Monk, ma anche Abdullah
Ibrahim, il linguaggio pianistico di Cojaniz è molto cresciuto. Sorprende
positivamente anche il dialogo instauratosi con i due giovani ma lucidi
partner, come lui friulani, Alessandro Turchet e l’ormai richiestissimo
Luca Colussi, esemplari per attenzione, fantasia ed interplay. Non
sembra esagerato affermare che A.P. Trio possa rappresentare oggi
una fresca e salutare ventata di novità nel panorama del jazz italiano.
Quello che più colpisce del lavoro è lo scorrere fluido del racconto, che
rende i nove brani, tutti firmati dal leader, simili ai movimenti di un’unica
suite. Le composizioni sono nuove, se si esclude la ripresa di
un’incalzante Busy street (tratta fra l’altro dal recente «Beat
spirit», realizzato in duo con Bearzatti). Suggestiva ed ipnotica
l’iniziale A.P.Dance, mentre vira verso un blues profondo e
viscerale Captain F., blues capace poi di trasformarsi nel danzante
boogie di Black and groove. Ma la fluidità della musica nasce anche
dall’esistenza, fra le sue pieghe, di un racconto. E’ la storia di Willy,
bambino indaco, e del suo viaggio intorno alla Luna alla ricerca della
grande Maestra, fino all’incontro con il suo caldo abbraccio, verso un
futuro che è poi un ritorno al passato, all’origine delle cose, a
quell’Africa da dove tutto è partito e dove tutto ritorna. Sarà utile
leggere, a tal proposito, le belle note di copertina scritte dallo stesso
Cojaniz.

The useful and dialectic relationship between Claudio Cojaniz and
Caligola started in 2004 with «War orphans», a duo with Giancarlo
Schiaffini; «The heart of the Universe» is the sixth album released by
our label with the piano player from Friuli. There have been a piano
solo, another duo with Francesco Bearzatti, the NION Orchestra, a pipe
organ solo, and finally, intensely awaited for, his new Cd in trio, a group
which represents an obligatory test for any jazz pianist. It arrives ten
years after «Romantic circle» (Splasch), recorded with Carlo
Franceschinis and Nello Da Pont. The situation is different, with other
guys called to support his improvisations, but the spirit, passion and
inspiration are the same, even though the acquired maturity and
balance seem to appease a bit his musical frenzy. On the contrary now
the poetry, capacity of synthesis and originality are still more intense.
Although his gurus are still Ellington, Monk and Abdullah Ibrahim, the
Cojaniz piano style has ripened a lot. We’re also surprised about his
dialogue with two young but mature partners, like him from Friuli, as
Alessandro Turchet and Luca Colussi, now much in demand, exemplary
both for the attention, fantasy and interplay. We don’t overstate
declaring that A.P. Trio represents today a healthy breath of fresh new
air in the outline of Italian jazz. In this recording we are stricken by the
fluidity of the tale, so these nine tunes, all composed by the leader, are
like the movements of a suite. All the songs, except Busy
street (from «Beat spirit», with Bearzatti), are new. The
opening A.P.Dance is suggestive and hypnotic, meanwhile Captain
F. has a deep blues feeling, able to transform itself into the jiving boogie
of Black and groove. But the fluidity of the music also depends on a
story inside. It’s the Willy’ story, an indigo boy, about his voyage around
the Moon, searching for the great Teacher, till his touch with her warm
hug, towards a future which is also a return to the past, to the
humanity’s origin, to the Africa, where our civilization began and now
returns.
