Carla Marcotulli e Marcello Tonolo hanno avuto una splendida idea: celebrare l’intesa fra il compositore francese Michel Legrand e la coppia di parolieri americani Alan e Marilyn Bergman. Ma in questo disco c’è spazio anche per altri due autori, Carol Connors e Bobby Weinstein responsabili, rispettivamente, di Faded Roses e Where’s the Love, versione inglese di Sur les quais de Cherbourg, con testo di Jacques Demy. Il resto dei brani, fra cui vi sono alcune delle canzoni più note di Legrand, illustra la feconda ispirazione dei coniugi Bergman, che meriterebbero una ben maggiore popolarità, avendo collaborato, in oltre sessant’anni, con celebrità del calibro di Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Ennio Morricone e Sarah Vaughan. Michel Legrand è stato un compositore prolifico: ha scritto più di 200 colonne sonore per film e programmi televisivi, ma anche molte meravigliose canzoni. «Legrand Romance» è un omaggio originale e sincero alla sua arte musicale. L’esplorazione di questi dieci brani è affrontata dal pianista e dalla cantante con amore e rispetto; grazie a loro ne cogliamo l’essenza più intima, basata da un lato sul fluire in chiaroscuro della melodia, dall’altro sulle immagini evocate dai testi. La prima spesso ci avvolge in un ipnotico andamento ciclico (caratteristica dell’ultimo Bill Evans, che aveva fra i suoi standard preferiti You Must Believe in Spring), quasi indifferente alla pulsazione ritmica più esplicita. I secondi creano raffinati contrasti concettuali, da assaporare tanto nelle sorprendenti costruzioni metaforiche quanto nelle gustose allitterazioni (What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?). La fusione fra musica e parole crea emozioni di robusta maturità, canzoni adulte per il mondo contemporaneo, esposte dalla voce di Carla Marcotulli con profonda consapevolezza emozionale e timbrica, e sottolineate dal piano di Marcello Tonolo con squisita delicatezza armonica e dinamica. Di lui si apprezza il rispetto di ogni sfumatura compositiva e l’equilibrio nell’interazione con le parole; di lei, una trasparenza di dizione che non esclude una sensibilità autonoma rispetto alla tradizione afroamericana.

Carla Marcotulli and Marcello Tonolo came up with a great idea: celebrating the creative partnership between French composer Michel Legrand and American lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Yet this album also honors songwriters Carol Connors and Bobby Weinstein who penned, respectively, Faded Roses and Where’s the Love; the latter is the English version of Sur le Quai. The remaining tracks showcase the remarkable creativity of the Bergmans, whose contribution to popular music deserves far wider recognition. Over a career spanning six decades, they collaborated with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Ennio Morricone and Sarah Vaughan. Legrand himself was an extraordinarily prolific composer. He wrote more than 200 film and television scores, but also a catalog of unforgettable songs. «Legrand Romance» stands as a heartfelt tribute to his musical artistry. Marcotulli and Tonolo approach the ten pieces with both affection and respect, revealing their most intimate essence. On one hand there is the subtle ebb and flow of Legrand’s melodies; on the other, the vivid imagery evoked by the lyrics. The former often envelops the listener in a hypnotic cyclical motion — as in the late Bill Evans, who had You Must Believe in Spring among his favorite standards — almost detached from any overt rhythmic pulse. The lyrics create refined conceptual contrasts the listeners can enjoy in striking metaphorical constructions and delightful alliterations, as in What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?. The fusion of music and words evokes emotions of uncommon depth and maturity: songs for adults living in the contemporary world. Marcotulli delivers them with emotional awareness and tonal sensitivity, while Tonolo’s piano supports and enhances them with exquisite harmonic and dynamic subtlety. His playing reveals a deep respect for every nuance and a finely judged balance in his interaction with the lyrics; her singing combines a remarkable diction with an expressive sensibility that, while mindful of the African American vocal tradition, remains unmistakably her own.
