Baden Powell de Aquino, usually known as Baden Powell, born on 6th
August 1937 in Rio de Janeiro, was one of the most talented and
celebrated Brazilian guitarists and guitar composers of his time. He
combined classical techniques with popular harmony and swing. He
performed in many styles, including Bossa Nova, Samba, Latin Jazz
and MPB. Like most musicians growing up in the 1950s, he was deeply
influenced by jazz, especially be bop. In the Sixties Powell was one of
the prominent figures of the Bossa Nova movement, together with Tom
Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes. Powell also used vocalise
and scat singing, often in unison with the melody line (especially when
the melody was sung on the bass strings of the guitar). His later
recordings consist mostly of solo guitar or voice and guitar, just like this
beautiful concert organized by our association, a typical solo
performance of his last years. He played in 1995 in the famous
Montreux Jazz Festival and toured last time in Europe in 1996. In the
last years he converted to the Evangelical faith, to which he credits
overcoming his long addictions to alcohol and tobacco. He died of
pneumonia triggered by diabetes in his hometown on 26th September
2000.
